You are very confused. Linux is a kernel, Windows is an operating system. Ubuntu is a distrobution of Linux, as in it uses the Linux kernel. You guys cannot compare Linux to Windows. Linux is an EXTREMELY expandable kernel, as in it can run on a network switch or a super computer. You can compile your Linux kernel and tell what support your want in it. It is very thorough. Linux supports the most hardware out of any kernel, WIndows is tied to x86, and itanium.

Also if you compare Linux and Windows say: Linux vs the NT Kernel.

Oh and, I hope you realize Unix does not support .exe /dll files, which means Linux won't.

You can try Wine.(Though it suchs)

Windows, end of story. You have to jump through many hoops to get modern games (2006+) to work on Linux and even then its difficult for all but the most seasoned of Linux users.

Windows is technically a kernel as well, but markets the entire operating system under the same name. A linux distribution is just the linux kernel (modified 99% of the time), and prepackaged applications and GUI elements. Ubuntu IS Linux, but so is Fedora, OpenSuse, Debian, etc. You can take just the kernel, and build your own distribution around it for a completely unique element.

As far as games, Windows wins leaps and bounds over Linux. Wine can run some games, but it does so using OpenGL, and compatibility layers, so you'll see some performance and graphical differences, plus a lot of times you'll need to do some extra configuration to make it just work (and even more to make it work well).

If you plan on gaming in any seriousness, use Windows. You can always dualboot Windows and a version of Linux if you want to play around with it (a search on google will give you a how-to pretty quickly).

99% of distros do not modify the Linux kernel, you can compile it with different options, but that isn't modifying it. Also to GeneralX, be a Linux guru? Uhm, just read winehq and read if anyone had to do anything to get it to work. I used Linux for the first time and that was cake. I don't get where this notion of Linux is for pros, especially not when distrobutions like Ubuntu are so easy to use. Yes you have to use the terminal, but how is typing something like dpkg -i something.deb, but of course Ubuntu has a gui package manager. I mean if you think what that command meant, you will see: dpkg the package manager for Debian based systems, -i = install That is a very common command to use. Hard? Absolutely not. Or maybe chmod +x whatever.run You are giving permission to the .run file to make system changes sh whatever.run You are executing the run file. This stuff isn't hard, people just seem to be afraid of not seeing a GUI.

Jiggly, I'm curious about Linix/Unix is Ubuntu (Un-Bun-Tu) a good place to start?

Sorry for the topic hijack :O yeah but Windows would be the best option out of the two, as others have said

Yes, it is. Or you could just man all men out, and straight to FreeBSD which has no gui by default, but uh, I started with Ubuntu, but I made my friend who is equally smart as me, start on Debian, I just gave him a good start, and he is good to go. Oh and of course, WIndows is the way to go for gaming.

BSD being like Cmd or "Dos" as us old users would remember C:start "program" and that?

BSD is much more powerful than DOS :P Just a fyi in Unix, there is no "C:\" In Linux, Linux would call a sata hd, sdax, x being the number it is. The filesystem in Unix is much different that Windows, in BSD, well FreeBSD third party programs go in /usr/local/etc Linux just does /etc

FreeBSD, well all the BSDs are much more complex than DOS. Not that they are hard to use, just much more powerful. So is Linux, not every Linux distrobution comes with a gui. Usually in the install most of them ask you. I mean I love how Linux, FreeBSD, and the others BSDs, are not tied to a gui. You can install any desktop environment you want, and if the gui crashes, you can just go back to a terminal window. X11 is amazing.
