Hey guys. I have a friend who got a laptop from his uncle whom wants the data from it's locked HDD, because, appearently, his kid went into the BIOS and put some sort of password on it, but he won't admit it. Anyways, is there anything, such as, hacking/cracking that can be done to get the data from the HDD? Thanks.

Yes, you can do two things, download Ubuntu and burn it to a CD and boot off of it (but don't install it!). Locate the personal data on the laptop's hard drive and then copy it over to a USB flash key. Or you use a CMOS password cracker tool - search on google.

If the password is on the BIOS then you are going to have a very hard time resetting it...if that happens on a desktop pc you can just unplug it and then remove the little watch battery from the motherboard for 2 minutes,,,then the BIOS is reset removing any passwords, thats gonna be a LOT harder on a laptop though/

If it's a laptop you are in trouble, because they do not store it on the cmos, but on the recovery chip on it. You will have to contact the manufacture if it's a bios lock. If the hard drive had been encrypted (not a bios lock) you could crack it(I know how with the right linux distro) however if it's a desktop, grab the cmos battery on the motherboard and leave it out for an hour.
