Man, it always cracks me up when a game is this super, over-promoted, and then flops hard core.

For the past six months you couldn't search for a game on gamespot without brink coming up in the "also try this!" list.

And now... it has been relegated to the "average" hall of fame on virtually every gaming site, and from all my friends that own it that I've talked to.

First up, I don't own brink, however,

others here seem to be enjoying it, what I can is that as a general rule, I just play games to have fun. Some games I own and play reviewers hated, shadow harvest for example, but I still play, I really don't focus on scores or others opinion too much, I try squeeze as much fun that I can out of a game even when I'm dissapointed with it.

It's great that you get some satisfaction out of a product's supposed failure.
I usually hope that games are successful, if only because by buying some games I feel that I am supporting the work of developers, and when I see a mediocre score I feel like the support has been misplaced.
This game, however, looks more like a hit or miss. Quite a lot of good reviews if you look around. Game itself looks interesting; I'll probably wait and see how the community evolves before getting it, though, as I always do with multiplayer-centric games.

Haven't you heard? Gamespot doesn't do PC reviews any more. Just wait a few months and they'll copy-paste the console reviews into the PC space.

I'm disappointed in what I've heard of Brink. I was really looking forward to it; it just looked so different. It's also lame that you can't make girl characters, because I guess they were too lazy to make new skeletons with different animations. I do applaud them for now doing the Bioware thing and giving a girl character the same animations as a guy. Jock walk ahoy!

Still sad. Looked fun in the previews :|

Wasnt expecting much but this game is a breath of fresh air, the gameplay is fantastic.

With a few patches this could be one of the top multiplayer games this gen imo.

Glad I dont trust game reviews!

People always have lofty and unrealistic expectations. It would be nice if PC releases actually ran properly, though.. damn. Blops, Homefront, Brink, all have performance issues at launch.

But TOR.. I've already seen gameplay videos, I know that one's gonna suck. WoW in space.

Yesterday I explained why we would not be reviewing Brink right away, and I still believe that was a good decision. However, the PC review code arrived and we have played for a few hours. This still isn't a standard review, not with the short amount of time played, but we can happily report that the technical issues found in the Xbox 360 version pre-patch are nowhere to be seen.

The graphics look good, the game plays like a dream online, and aiming with a mouse and keyboard comes with the expected advantages. I feel like I have finally played Brink, and I'm having a great time doing so. To whet your appetite for a more in-depth appraisal in the coming weeks, here are a few notes on the PC version of the game.

Most of the reviews are for xbox version, seems like the PC version is alot better.

Evidently I need glasses as well, that game looks ugly as hell and it still has no shadows... Unless you count that pixel worth of darkening under the wall.

Jeeze, that's one ugly shadow D: I'm pretty sure wow's shadows are nice and smooth. Regardless, that game's uglier than sin, worse than the ugly graphics "art style" the animations are just absolute garbage.

the PC version of brink is the one that was meant to be played. there are little to no bugs.... just some balance issues. i have run into zero lag, zero graphical issues (some jump animations but that is all) and lots of fun.

i see evry few if no character shadows.. i also see terrible terrain textures and not a single piece of that looks pleasing to the eye anyway..

id also like to point out the distinct lack of AA in the pic.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it bud, besides a few small bugs and the server browser being bad, Ive not had any issues either. Just a really fun team based game that is all about team work and has a slight learning curve.

Whats your steam name? Should do some games up sometime, have already done some good games with two gamepsot members so far.

i see.... shadows all over, including self shadowing...pretty nice texture work on the mountains in the distance and the character itself considering the art ****.... and yeah.... there is definintely AA in this pic. it is pretty apparent. AA doesnt eliminate jaggies buddy.... incase you werent aware, it just severely reduces their appearance. This pic was taken with 4x AA most likely. that is typically what games look like with 4x AA on.

Brink? Brink didn't flop. And the people who find it average are probably just bad at it. No, I'm no fan boy, I think its average aswell, but its GOOD. However, I only don't like it because the horrid thing wasnt optimized AT ALL for HD ATI cards. Cards that can take Crysis 2 on max settings

I just hope gamespot will review the game sometime.. Even if its month or 2 late... It would be a slap in the face if atthe end of the day they left the review off. Gamespot has come alive on Pc again this year though Shift 2 was left out to dry on a Pc review... We will see. Alot of my friends seem to enjoy it.

... TOR IS going to suck. bad. Why didnt they just make a KOTOR 3? /facepalm Seriously, I know BioWare wants more money, to escape the grasp of EA probably, but this way? And if you ARE going to do it this way, dont make the characters look so cartoony. It looks horrible. What happened to the realistic models of KOTOR 1 and 2? Couldn't those just have been improved upon? Ugh....

Dude, I don't care if everyone on earth played TOR, it doesn't mean it's good. And, what? Bioware is perfectly capable of making bad games, I mean, what the hell was Dragon Age II? It was a great movie. But a bad game.

And it should also be known by now that a game being good doesn't actually mean it will be a big success or at least not to the point where it is popular. There have been plenty of good, and great, games that haven't sold all to well. Probably well enough to make some money, but not enough to continue it in a franchise.

I do believe TOR will make them money. I recently started thinking that the reason there are so many MMOs that just get destroyed within a year is most likely because even when that happens they most likely do end up turning a profit off of hype and boxes sold. I mean, I just can't understand why so many publishers would be putting all this money in just for a slight chance that their MMO might be 1 of the 10 being released that month to not fail within a year.

Dragon Age 2 definitely had its flaws, but it was by no means a bad or awful game.. That being said I was really turned off to what I saw of Brink on my friend's 360.. The game gave me the same kind of feeling the moment I launched Hellgate London demo for the first time..

Ya I'm not sure why all the hate for the PC version - I just spent a couple hours playing some of the challenges with a buddy and it was really good. We found the challenges to be difficult but fair (i.e. we didn't blow through them but once we figured out what we had to do they we able to be completed). There was no lag to be found, the game controls well and looks good enough.

I have read some horrid reviews and seen some terrible scores but the games were reviewed on consoles - as we posted previously alot of the bugs or issues that have held the game back on consoles are not relevant in the PC version.

Well, they got proper shooting, cool cinematics, a long game according to what they say. You can play nonlinear the levels, pick up boxes and go inside airducts behind, there are skill points F1 and 12345 weapon slots, also inventory. All those things gotta worth something.

I sure hope so. Probably they wanted to get closer to the first Deus Ex, rather than base themselves on the second one. To be honest the art design is intriguing.

Agreed, I was very frustrated with the first release on Monday night/ Teusday but a quick patch fixed some of the lag issues. I really hope they continue to develop this game. There is a lot of potential with it as long as they focus on fixing the issues.

Wasnt expecting much but this game is a breath of fresh air, the gameplay is fantastic.

With a few patches this could be one of the top multiplayer games this gen imo.

Glad I dont trust game reviews!

Yup, already having a blast on this game and more enjoyable then most online shooters, but if they keep supporting this game (they have said there is another pc patch coming soon to) and maybe add another map or two I could see this being my online FPS game for years (with some Battlefield3 tossed in there to im sure hehe).

Its always nice when a game surprises ya and this one definatly has for me, its just in a whole nother league when it comes to team work and fun factor imo ;)

I fired up Brink for the first time last night after work. It was interesting to see how badly it ran on my machine, the frame rate was shocking, the game is ugly even on the highest settings. Here's hoping they patch it to a working state soon. Now before anyone says "oh your machine is probably too crap to run it"... Core i7 970 hex core, 12 GB RAM, 2x GTX 480s SLId... blah blah blah. As it stands IMO the game is a broken piece of garbage!

it might be dual gpu support (or lack thereof) issues. there are tons of games that handle two gpu's horribly.

SW: ToR anyone? ;)

snared04

Say what it hasnt flopped..Enjoying the hell out of the game..Its not to shabby..Its very fun and addicting..Stop listening to review scores..Its how alpha protocol got a bad score and that was a fun game..

I actually checked the Steam forums before I left for work, seems the game is capped at 30FPS.

it's the way listen servers on IDTech4 work... just play the campaign or challenges on a dedicated server and you'll have as much FPS as your pc can provide.
