I need a bit more information. Are you starting from scratch? Would you prefer a projector or HDTV? If a projector, do you need a screen or do you have a large wall that can be used? How far away will you be from the screen / TV? Surround sound, or not? Do you need a Blu-Ray player?
Anything else you want in a home theater (LCD, plasma, speaker cabinets, floor standing speakers, etc.)? If you don't know too much about home theaters, I wouldn't worry about much more than what I listed earlier^^^
Don't settle for wimpy little home theater in a box from companies like Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, ect. The only good HTIB companies are Onkyo, who also make great home theater receivers. Look for their stuff on newegg, tigerdirect, amazon.
Onkyo HTiB is decent for the price:
$291.99 - 7.1 surround - HDMI 1.4 (3D support)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882120168R&cm_re=onkyo-_-82-120-168R-_-Product
Though if you are willing to spend more than that I think you should just avoid home theater in a box and buy a real reciever/speakers.
Denon as well. Yamaha has one that's not too shabby either.Don't settle for wimpy little home theater in a box from companies like Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, ect. The only good HTIB companies are Onkyo, who also make great home theater receivers. Look for their stuff on newegg, tigerdirect, amazon.

Hello, he said he desn't want to spend 100G....
Did you even bother to look at the prices of Onkyo systems?. The ones you told him to get (Which would be even more since he is in Canada) are known to be absolute junk that sound worse than a normal stereo system. Heres Onkyo's S3300 for 499 canadian or the better sounding one for 699.both have HDMI 1.4 for 3D and all the other features of it. get the s3300 if you just want a basic sound system (the wire is integrated to the speaker so you can't get longer stuff. the subwoofer is passive, not powered. its just not nearly as good as a powered one imo.) or get the s5300 if you want great sound. you can use your own speaker wire (14 gauge or 16 is highly recommened) for your own lengths and it has a powered subwoofer. 7.1 instead of 5.1 speakers, and better speakers on top of that. Also more inputs and a better receiver, has more power and better sound.

Those are nice deals, I have seen something like those before.. now that's in one box deal.. it would cost $1000 if bought seperately... if bought seperately, and then speaker wires alone could cost near $100 if he chose the good kind.

The Onkyo is only $300-350. No comparison between it and the Logitech, Samsung, Panasonic,Sony stuff.[QUOTE="Dogswithguns"][QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"]

Hello, he said he desn't want to spend 100G....
The Onkyo is only $300-350. No comparison between it and the Logitech, Samsung, Panasonic,Sony stuff.I also agree that he should go with the Onkyo, but in Canada the 5.1 HTiB goes for $500 and the 7.1 HTiB goes for $700. And for that price a place like Bay Bloor Radio, or Kromer Radio in Toronto could bundle some speakers and a receiver.Example:
PSB AlphaHT1 $499 @ Bay Bloor Radio
Now I'm sure they can bundle him with a decent reciever for a fair price. Alsoprices ata store like Bay Bloor Radio are not set in stone and can be dropped by just about anyone on the show floor.
Nothing wrong with a PSB system either. Can't you order from the US internet companies up there in Canada? I've ordered some Hd-DVD's and Blu-Ray discs from a Canadian company. It just cost a little more in shipping (inetvideo.com)rastanMost places will not ship to Canada, IE. Amazon.com, Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com, etc... And the Canadian versions of those websites are limited in products. Example, Newegg Canada doesn't even have a single Onkyo product.
Get the one in a box. a surround system and 5.1 speakers with DVD player. about $300 or less. Dogswithgunsmy friend got a nice one in a box that was a blu ray player for about the same price

Low price doesn't always equal junk, but in this case I'd agree. HTiB is not the best option.[QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"][QUOTE="monson21502"]my friend got a nice one in a box that was a blu ray player for about the same priceNVIDIATI

Low price doesn't always equal junk, but in this case I'd agree. HTiB is not the best option.i thought it sounded good. it was a LG all in one. but i`ll admit i never owned a surround sound system in my lifeSo true! A friend of mine was always impressed with his Samsung LCD and Samsung HTiB setup and last year I had him over to watch the new Star Trek BD on my Elite Kuro 9G/Paradigm monitor 7, and he was blown away by it. So advice to the TC, avoid home theatre in a box if possible.Definitely garbage. Just like all those people who use to say that 128K iTunes songs were as good as CD. They hear some sort of surround and think it is great until you hear what good surround sound is supposed to sound like.

Yeah, well the price of Onkyo in Canada is a bit much, so like I said before it might be worth it to get real speakers and receiver. The reason Onkyo's are OK as HTIB is that they package a descent receiver, with descent real speakers, and a descent sub. Seems simple enough, but these other companies are just trying to make coin by packaging as little plastic, amplification, and speaker they can into a box they can make huge margins on. rastanAnd then they use words like "1000watts" and people think its amazing... Not to mention the fact most of them can't decode DTS-HD or TrueHD.
