Looking for a 7.1 headphone solution.

I am looking to supply my headphones with actual simulated 7.1 surround sound. I used to have an Earforce DSS that did this but never got the games I was playing to actually transmit 7.1 channel information to the DSS, like it did on the xbox 360 that I had originally used it for and now I am looking for something else.

I can get something like a USB dongle, which I have (the HyperX DD dongle for the Revolver S) but the device seems to be malfunctioning, and isn't very loud at all, I want some amplification as well.

So, I am looking at the Astro Mixamp Pro TR and the Creative Sound BlasterX G6 and any other possible solutions to yield the same result of 7.1 DD headphone simulated surround sound and good amplification. I should also note that with my more recent gaming PC build, my new motherboard does NOT have an optical output. Not that Realtek outputs surround sound on the fly anyway.

Suggestions?

I've dabbled at this for the longest time, until I eventually learned that high-end stereo headphones are far more reliable than self-proclaimed "surround sound" headphones. No one so far has been able to been able to fit 5-8 drivers into pair of headphones and have it sound natural.

I, myself, have settled with a good pair of Sennheisers (Sennheiser HD 598/600 at least), and since I frequently switch my PC's output between my headphones and stereo speakers, I purchased Dolby Atmos from the Windows Store so I don't have to keep manually switching from real 7.1 to stereo just to hear everything on my speakers (my stereo headphones can hear all channels when using 7.1, but my speakers miss information.) Dolby Atmos sounds pretty much as good as real 7.1 with my headphones. Windows Sonic just sounds terrible to me.

Dolby Atmos via headphones didn't sound any different to me than plain audio. And the Dolby Headphone adapter with 7.1 sounds quite good, I can tell a huge difference between it and stereo. So I'd like to stick with Dolby Digital virtual 7.1. I just need more volume out of it. Does a MixAmp require an optical output to work with a PC? And how does it amplify audio compared to a Sound BlasterX G6?

Not a fan. It seems that they do not go loud enough for me. My wife loves them though so those are her headphones.

@Diddies: Try them, use the DTS-X.

As you see that was on my first computer build which is now my wife's. I even googled solutions and it seemed that it was a common issue with the headset.

@Diddies: never faced such problem, guess it happens.

@burntbyhellfire: A 7.1 Dolby headphone adapter? Atmos sounds great to me, but if the effect is better with such an adapter, do you mind providing the model name so I can Google it? I don't know if you can link store pages on the Gamespot forums.
