Hey guys--I'm looking for a good RTS; my criteria is pretty vague. I'm looking for visceral, immersive and engaging action, a good amount of strategic depth (as long as the learning curve isn't too insane) and as much as I hate to admit it, pretty explosions.

Yep. Company of Heroes is right down your street. Or try Men of War. Men of War is good, very tactical and looks nice.

This. fits most of what your looking.. not much strategic depth, holds your hand and walks you where you have to be. But the action really draws you in and the explosion look pretty :P

Dawn of war 2 has just that. The melee kills in DoW 2 are exactly what you'd describe as visceral and exciting. CoH is good for firefights but lacks the melee intensity of DoW2.

Visceral? Oh boy... like there were many... ok, units die and stuff, but it's not like you see their organs and flesh being ripped apart :p

Try Rise of Nations anyway. Old but still great nonethless.

World in Conflict. A great single player campaign and it is only $10 on Steam right now. You'd be a fool to pass it up.

I paid $60 for it back in 2007 to get it day of and I thought that the SP was worth it. It is about 8-10 hours and has a very good story. It is every bit as good as CoH, but it actually adds some characters and some awesome motion capture cutscenes that are in-engine. It's very impressive and an extremely good game. For $10 bucks, as I said before, you would be crazy to pass it up.

Hi;) Bloodletter91. If you are looking for a very good RTS game I can strongly recommend: Disciples III: Renaissance, and also Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Meanwhile, in the 1st quarter of 2010 two other good strategic games coming out: Supreme Commander 2 and Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. - I think that you'll like Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight best though, because you have interesting races to choose, and also very good graphics, that you can rarely meet in RTS games; But, of course the choice is yours...

The above mentioned are very good: Company of Heroes, World in Conflict...

I would add Empire Total War, which has a good RTS element besides of the turn-based strategy. Since 1.5 version they have made it nearly bug free and the DLC looks cool.

Also watch out for Napoleon Total War in February but don't buy it on release date, the developer has a reputation for releasing broken AI and technically unstable games and then patching them for half a year before they become enjoyable.

Yeah. Get World in Conflict. Amazing game. But CoH is also amazing. But for $10, you can't pass WiC up.
