Hello, Im a newbie (of course). I came to this site because Im looking for a game to play on my PC. I'm a hardcore lover of Final Fantasy X & X-2. I haven't played any video games since 2004. I now have 2 babies, they are getting older now and one will be in school next year. I can't afford to go out and buy a new PS2 (my old one done bit the dust). Im trying to find a good RPG game for my pc...BUT NOT FF XI. If anyone has any suggestions, they would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance....

Rachael

Actually, depends on what you are looking for in an RPG. If you're looking for something similar to the FF games, you're mostly out of luck (there's one game that I know of, and it's years old called Septerra Core). For a D&D experience there's Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 (with expansions). For a more "free-roaming" feel, there's Fallout 1 and 2, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Anyways, just a few options.

Bear in mind that The Witcher has some mature content in it (there's a little mini-game where you collect "baseball"-style cards of the women you sleep with (and they're in fairly provocative poses).

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a very good role playing experience, as is Morrowind if you like a more "magical" approach. If I understand FF very well (Which I probably don't), Fable might be a solid choice for a RPG-lite.

D&D refers to Dungeons and Dragons, the pen and paper (PnP) that almost every western RPG bases their play mechanics on.

Fable might be a good thing for her to try, but if you're implying that FF is "RPG-lite"...well that's not really true. Final Fantasy is more of the "Epic and long turn-based combat" variety.

Hey we're here to help. Have you looked into how powerful your system is yet? We'll really need to know that in order to make some decent recommendations. Also, do you prefer turn-based combat a la the FF games, or are you looking to get into real-time combat (basically there's no battle screen, you see an enemy, run up to it and attack it by clicking on it)?

Instead of doing what whitey was suggesting, it might just be easier to go to System Requirements Lab. Run one of the tests for any game, and it will tell you what specs you have on your machine. Easy as pie.

Im still trying to figure out how powerful my pc is, and i prefer turn based combat. Im soon finding out that I won't be able to get anything remotely close to FF for pc but anything with a good story like FFX. I really got into the characters and greatly enjoyed playing that game. I just really need something to help occupy my days. Im a stay at home mom and Im really starting to get cabin fever. So Im taking ALL ya'll suggestion and reviewing each game. So, keep em coming.

Thanks Again,

Crazy Momma

Just forget about that little mean guy. Anyway I suggest something like Morrowind, it is still a good game, and it doesn't have steep requirements, and on top of that it can last a very long time, AND its cheap...wow I really have to go play Morrowind again

The best bang for your buck would likely be the gold edition or whatever it's called - it's around 20 bucks and includes the expansion pack. Another RPG that you could pick up that would last you a long time and be very cheap and easy to run on your system would be Neverwinter Nights (the first one, not the second one).

Oh, and if Neverwinter Nights is still too demanding for your video card, there are a few more options:

  • Baldur's Gate 2 Collection (Baldur's Gate 2 + expansions) OR you could go for...
  • D&D nerdgasm
  • Diablo Battlechest (this is RPG-lite at its finest...mostly geared for action, with some elements of a story)
  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (steampunk version of Baldur's Gate)
  • Gothic 2 (the prime competitor to Morrowind...some consider it the superior RPG)

rach69jez

That's more of an RTS...but that doesn't mean that it's a bad RTS. It looked to be pretty interesting (I was sorely tempted to pick it up myself, but my gaming plate was already overflowing)...but it's not exactly what one would call an RPG.

Now, if it's RTS with decent story-lines you're looking for, then:

  • LotR: BfME (either one...or just get the anthology)
  • Warcraft 3 Battlechest
  • Starcraft Battlechest
  • Homeworld (actually, get both Homeworld 1 and 2)
Oh, and you might want to check out a little game called "Freedom Force" (or "Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich). Both games have a more comic book feel to their RPG-ness.
