Yes CNC 3 is complete garbage, WC3 is probably in the bargain bin so you should definitely get that, AOE3 is suppose to be kinda a downer I heard so idk.
Supreme Commander assuming you end up liking the game probably has the longest lasting value of any RTS as they have done numerous things with the community to keep the game breathing strongly.
GPGNet has actually surpassed battle.net in just about every single possible way. They have lowered the price of the game to 30 bucks in some stores for the upcomming expansion so ya that looks like your best bet.
Warcraft 3 is awesome and with The Frozen Throne Expansion, it has the most enthralling SP mode I've played in a while. If you are a heavy RTS tradisitonalist, then you may no like it so much (building defenses is a pretty non-existant strategy is Warcraft 3, it's all about armies as the defences buildings, with the exception of maybe a cannon tower, are weak). I definately would recommend it as one of my favourite RTS games of all time.
Age of empires 3? Never really got into it, found it too boring in ways, though I loved AGe of Empires 1 and 2 and they are probably my favourite RTS games ever.
CnC3? didn't really like it because every match with an AI became a race to get superweapons.
Supreme Commander? Was a good game I suppose, but too slow, I like RTS games that are more tactical rather than strategic, ie. build you army up and start sending troops right off the bat, with SupCom, you have to spend ages building up a large army before it gets interesting.
If, like me, you prefer straight tactical games, get Ground Control 2. It sells for around $5 nowadays but the graphics are still impressive, it's made by teh guys from World in Conflict and has the same mechanics, ie. no base building, just straight tactical deployment of troops to the field as well as unit direction and elevation and terrain playing a part in battles.
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War is an awesome RTS game. If you liked Company of Heroes, well guess what, Relic made Dawn of War too. I actually think Dawn of War is better than Company of Heroes, but I'm a Warhammer nut so maybe I'm biased. But really you can't go wrong with the Platinum Edition which is pretty cheap and comes with everything you need.
But if you REALLY only want either AoE III or War III........it's kinda like comparing Apples to Oranges. AoE III has more depth and strategy than Warcraft III......however.....Warcraft III has a lot better atmosphere and more "fun" units. Guess it boils down to whether you like historic RTS type games or if fantasy swords 'n sorcery is more up your alley. Though I can say if you are playing for campaign storymode then Warcraft III wins hands down.
I wouldnt say you spend ages building armies in Supreme Commander. Watch THIS replayof acommentatedgame onSupCom on a standard 10x10km mapwith standard buildspeeds and such... Overbefore 15minutes (if you want that is). Granted, this match takes place on one of theaveraged sized maps (largest are 81x81km sized), so naturally its quicker. Of course, it can still end this soon on larger maps as well with clever usage of transports and tactical strikes against the enemie's economy and commander.

If you have a dual core PC (or a really good single core like me), and atleast 1gb-2Gb of RAM, then I suggest you get Supreme Commander. Its incredibly long lasting, and a great game if you get past the large learning curve. I've been playing since the beta, and I'm still learning myself. It actually runs great too after the performnace boosting patches!
Go with Dawn of War, if you get the anthology you'll get 7 races, 3 story driven campaigns + a risk style take over the world campaign where yuo can play as any of the 7 factions. Multiplayer is also pretty good, balancing 7 races properly is impossible but Relic do a good job.

ya i have anthology and its kickass but i have
to agree with that guy dat said b&w 2 wil get you hooked.
B&W 2 is a very good game
Well, if you don't have BFME II, then definitely get it. I got it yesterday, and have been thoroughly addicted. There is a mass of content to play with. StarCraft is also an amazing RTS, that has a pretty lengthy story mode, due to 3 big campaigns. The game also still has a massive Multiplayer following, with plenty of servers to compete in. However, to answer your question, if you are deadset on getting WC3 or AOE3, i would say AOE3. Liquid_Snake92
BFME2 is an extremely shallow game a poorly balanced one at that, once you've had it for a while longer you should see that. Even the most shallow RTS (like CNC 3) can seemingly have lots of depth if you've only played it a little.
thank you, I will be trying the demo for dawn of war and suprememe commander
Thanks for your help

Sadly the demo for Supreme Commander is actually a train wreck, first off it's far less optimized then the real game so it will probably run like crap for you and it's pretty bugged to.
If you need to play the demo, first off stay away from the single player part of the demo as it has a major bug that kills it.
Play the skirmish mode vs the AI and try to read online how to play it somewhere because the game is quite different then most RTS games and will seem extremely slow paced if you don't have a great idea of what your doing, and the demos tutorials aren't much help.
THe main thing I advise you to do is make sure you take advantage of the hold down shift so you can que up multiple structures to build and build tons of stuff and never stop, in most games you want just one or maybe 2 unit building factories, in Supreme Commander it's not uncommon to have over a dozen of varies types (there is a land air and sea factory.)
