If you are going refuse to try anything unless it's free you're in for great disappointment. Some free MMOs use to be good until they got bought out. (I.E. Silkroad, Dark Elden, Hero Online, and many others.) My favorite free to play ever is owned by a horrible horrible company. The cheapest item is $40 and all of them only last for a month. And instead of using the money to make the game better they are whoring out advertisements on Xfire.
Today there are companies that hold a handful of MMOs, don't go for stand alone MMOs because they will just be bought out. But here are two guys that are very reasonable, have a great balance between people who buy items and people who don't, (more people buy items then most people think and some times it's game breaking) and have great games. Most of them are cartoonish and sometimes childish but seeing how you like Nintendo style games and WoW it shouldn't bug you.

There is a Asian game that is more popular then Wow in China that's now here and it's very WoW like except for the multiple races and the 'evil' cla.sses. http://www.talismanonline.com/ I haven't played it yet but right now it's stand alone and sooner or later it my be bought out by a company that will make items more expensive and lower the game updates, support, and innovation. :(
