This isn't solely about pc, but I figure that the pc crowd would be more knowing than that of the ps4 one, in this regard. My plasma went out, months back. I'm going to get an estimate sometime soon. In the meantime, I figured why not get a new monitor.

What I'm looking for is something in the 27 inch range, maybe 24, with the fastest response time possible. At the moment I'm looking at a few BenQ and Asus models. What I'm unsure of is which display tech is best for games. I know IPS is all the rage now, mostly because of apple i assume, but then I read that TN panels are the best for games.

Now, going back in the day, I remember TN panels having awful color shift, yet then again the backlighting is completely different now.

Any advice? I'm open to suggestions.

thanks.

TN if you are looking for 120Hz monitor, IPS for colours. If you want fast response time I think there is a 24' 144Hz monitor from Asus or BenQ. @JigglyWiggly_ knows a thing or two about monitors.

Unless you are very keen on fps games and can hold easily 120-144fps, go for IPS. Those ultra fast TN 120hz monitors have very dull colors and poor image quality for achieving such response times.

You're not going to get input lag or ghosting with 5-8ms monitors, i tried so many different monitors and even hd tv's, and only noticed ghosting on big tv's with all those sharpening effects on. If you posted on ps4 forums i guess you'll be using it with a console aswell, so 120-144hz would be even more pointless.

I suggest this brand new IPS from LG, i have an older model with similar panel and works great

Oh one more thing, if you're going 1920x1080, just don't go over 24".

I can't recommend TN panels unless your really going to be taking advantage of the extra hrz by keeping a steady 120fps or higher. Simply being they look like garbage. I'm currently using an Asus PLS panel, the PB278q. I have large sharps and Sony screens and non of them even come close to the colors and crispness of images my Asus monitor provides. If you go for a 1080p tn though make sure you at least get gsync. Might as well be cutting edge even if it comes with shit picture quality.

Thank you all for the responses. I've been going back and fourth between options. Originally thought I'd go for a 27inch benq, but then saw that for a similar price I could get a high end Sony 32inch tv. So right now I'm currently looking at the Sony KDLw32650a and the Eizo Foris FS2333. Can't seem to make up my mind--if only the Eizo was slightly larger, and I'm thinking the audio interface isn't as good as the sony.

TC, you mention PS4, are you going to be using this monitor with a PS4? Because you won't benefit at all from a 120hz monitor. Consoles are locked to 60hz output.

Not trying to derail thread, but how do you tell if your monitor is TN or IPS? I bought mine a few years ago so I guess it's possible that it's neither.

Here is mine. I knew buying it that it wasn't top of the line. However, I'm happy with the performance I've had with it for the 2+ years that I've had it.

Their displays are 144 Hz, and they are designed with the help of professional gamers. They are featured in every major eSports event, because BenQ sponsors all the major tournaments.

I know and I know they are probably the best 120+hz monitors but I do not believe for a second that they have the best picture quality that money can buy. They might have good pq from a TN point of view but I can promise you my Dell IPS has a better quality picture even at a lower res than 1440. Of course the BenQ has higher hz...so just depends what you're looking for I guess.

A high performance monitor is scalable, but more importantly, the response time is blazing fast which will improve the quality of your gaming experience ten-fold. Also, the picture will look noticeably better on a monitor due to the insanely high contrast ratios and picture clarity found only on high-end displays.

I agree, my point was that he/she can get a monitor with a great picture, fast input times, etc, WITHOUT 120/144hz(since the consoles wont take advantage of it) and save a few bucks.

Its not IPS because it would say its IPS in its description. IPS generally adds around $80 - $100 unto the pricetag, with all else being equal, so they'll have to mention it quite loudly to justify the price beyond the original line.As far as a visual inspection goes, usually by moving your head to an extreme angle (about 140-ish degree or higher), you should have minimal color shifting and even small text should be legible. This wont tell you the difference between VA or IPS, just that it is or isn't a TN.

Well, mostly ps4, I'd say. At least at the moment, that is. The option is always nice down the line, though.

And, now i'm up in the air again. I thought all the benq monitors were TN panels, no? Can anybody describe the color difference between TN and VA? I've read reviews on the Eizo Foris and it seems to be the best overall, according to the dedicated gaming crowd--color vs brightness vs ghosting vs lag/etc.

Like some other have said in other post it really comes down to the quality of the particular monitor more so than the IPS vs TN comparison. You can buy a crappy IPS in which case a good TN set would look better. Point being buy a quality set....go TN if you want 120+hz otherwise go with a quality IPS.

Just my opinion.

I use an Asus PLS panel, the PB278Q. It runs at 60hz at 1440p and it's the best monitor/screen I have ever laid my eyes on in person. I'll take image quality over the extra hz anyday. My GPU would only get around 80fps on 1080p so what's the point of buying a screen with horrible picture quality and colors for the extra 20fps above a working 60fps over something that looks nicer and is able to run at 60fps. I recommend the better quality picture over the extra hz but to each his own I guess.

That's a tn panel, and uses the same panel as the vg248qe which is much cheaper.
