I'm currently using KRK Rokit RP8 G2's. I wanted to upgrade to something that delivers more pleasing sound and the same amount of bass (or more bass would be niceas well). I'm open to both active monitors and hi-fi speakers. Or you recommend hi-fi, I'd need an amp recommendation as well.

Thanks

Klipsch pro media 2.1 or swan m50w. The swans are much better, but cost $300 compared to $130. I highly advise the swans.

The rokits are pretty good i have the 5, but they lack bass extension and bass at higher volumes garbles the mids.

What's your budget? and would you consider DIY (basic kit)?

Sorry, forgot about that, I made multiple posts on multiple forums and forgot to put in my budget. I'm looking to spend $600-800. I don't know anything about DIY speaker jobs, so I'm not sure if I'd be able to do that.

Would you be interested in learning? Basic kits are very easy, some don't even require you to assemble the cabinet or crossover. Usually all you would need is a screw driver, and in some cases a soldering iron to connect wires to and from the drivers/crossover/binding posts.

I'd be willing to do it only if the speaker I'm assembling has good quality for the price paid (better than speakers I don't have to assemble).

That's usually the idea, a lot of the time the only rivals to speakers in the DIY market are some in the second hand market. Now most of the kits I have in mind don't do bass the same way your KRKs do, in other words they won't hit those low notes (45-60Hz range). For this a 2.1 might be a good idea if you want to keep and expand upon the bass. Now I will say the only thing that may turn you off to DIY is your soldering ability, sometimes a poor solder can compromise a speaker. On that note I would first check the used/local market for anything of interest. I've seen some amazing speakers go for very low prices, like a pair of Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature Monitors for ~$800CAD, a speaker like that would leave a similarly price DIY kit hard pressed.

Anyways if you want to browse around at some DIY kits that may appeal to you, take a look at madisound or parts-express, most other DIY sites won't always have easy to build kits.

For a budget build I would normally agree, but given he'll be coming from KRK Rokit RP8 G2s... I'd love a pair of those KRKs! Some follow-up questions before I make some suggestions:

  • "...something that delivers more pleasing sound and the same amount of bass" I'm hoping you can expand upon that. A clear understanding of exactly what you're looking for will be a tremendous help.
  • Are you just looking for bookshelf speakers? How much desk space do you have available?
  • Where are you (country and closest major city). Either I or another poster might be able to suggest local resources.
  • What are you using for a sound card?
  • What are you using the speakers for primarily? Gaming, video, music, movies, etc.?
  • Surround sound: Yes or no?
  • Room for a small amplifier? Receiver?
  • Subwoofer: Do you have space?

Happy gaming,

Boz

1- I want a speaker that delivers more detailed sound and goes down to around ~45hz on the bottom end (in the tech specs, I don't care if it actually can do 45hz audibly or not). Basically what I'm saying is that I want similar speakers that are more detailed, have larger soundstage, punchier mids, etc.

2- Desk space isn't an issue, I'd have enough room for anything recommended. I just don't want to be putting tower speakers on my desk (I want the tweeters to be around eye level)

3- Seattle, WA, USA

4- Cambridge DACMagic

5- Music is the highest priority, followed by gaming and movies.

6- No

7- I have plenty of room for an amp.

8- I have room for a subwoofer, but I'd prefer not to have one. One of the major reasons is that I don't want the bass to be audible throughout my house (my setup would be located in my basement, which has a concrete floor).

Well, I've seen some used Totem Rainmakers that might be exactly what you're looking for.

Though the price would leave you with not a lot for an amp, not that these need anything too special.

http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1322407416&/Totem-Rainmaker

Open box Totem Rainmakers $680 (retail is $1125)

Made in Canada, these can hit those low notes, give some punch, and maintain a high level of detail.

Well you said a $600-$800 budget, so $680 for those shipped leaves $120 for an amp. All you need to power them is something that can output 30-100watts@4ohms. So you could always find a used amp.

Certainly my mistake, for a second I thought they were sold singularly. I noticed the Totem Dreamcatchers are highly reviewed as well. Many comparisons I read up on placed the Dreamcatchers above the Rainmakers. I'm just worried that I wouldn't get the dB output I'm looking for (I like my music relatively loud). Also, I couldn't seem to find any Dreamcatchers for sale anywhere, just that they were $575 a pair. What amp (new or used) would you recommend?

I would look for a used NAD or Rotel amp, they're good quality and generally are sold for a fair price on the used market. Of course there are all sorts of amps, so once you decide on your speakers take a look and see what would be best suited to power them. The used amp market changes very fast I find, so if you don't see something you want just wait a few days.

Well yeah, in the used market some of the older ones can be seen starting at ~$75-$150

Example: Canuck Audio Mart - Rotel RA-810A integrated amplifier - $90

How important is gaming to you? 2.1 speakers cannot offer the directional sound necessary for some types of games, FPS and action games for example. Something like Logitech Z906 should be able to handle most tasks decently. While it may not be as great as some more expensive 2.1 speakers when it comes to music, unlike those 2.1 speakers they won't be useless in games with directional sound.
