Dreamfall is not a point-and-click, it has console-based controls. Definitely check out the first game and steer clear of Dreamfall because it offer virtually no gameplay or challenge.
I recall there was a game called Runaway that's pretty decent. Also, if you don't mind playing very old games, check out Sanitarium, one of my top 3 adventure games. I have no idea where to find a copy, though.
The entire Police Quest, King's Quest and Space Quest series have just recently been released in compilation packs/box sets - whatever you want to call it. You can buy them at the store or online and the sets retail for $19.99. Doesn't get much better than those games. Note that these sets were released to be compatible with XP and I assume Vista, although I don't use Vista yet.
You can get some games mentioned here from "abandonware.com", but will need to use dosbox or like. A lot of games like lucasarts and sierra games are protected now. You may be able to buy cds online from ebay or amazon. Great games like Monkey Island sell for quite a lot. I'm sure they will eventually be reissued like the above mentioned games. Also, there are some independent developers that make traditional point and clicks today - not hard to find if you google and many are free.
As for games like The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, I disagree with some posters here about being point and click. Adventure games today are the natural evolution of the older point and click games, but with better graphics and interface. The TLJ series is well worth it. The Syberia series is popular and beloved but I tired of the first one.
7 posts and no one's mentioned the broken sword series?
the most recent BS game was total BS (if you get me), but broken sword 1 and 2 are some of the finest point n click puzzle adventure games ever made, and while the third isn't quite there - it's still a great game too
definitely check out the broken sword series - the first three games, anywayÂ

Blah...BS4 is the best BS since first oneÂ
Myst series, Broken Sword 4, Syberia 1-2, Longest Journey, Sam and Max Episodes. Just few more recent recommendations. Simply examples, because I could make a list of over hundred great point and click adventure games :)
If you could at least narrow the selection(what sub-genre, perspestive, is it horror or comedy etc)Â
www.scummvm.org has two free ones. I highly recommend Beneath a Steel Sky.
http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm - Every game in the "John DeFoe Quadrilogy" (5 Days, 7 Days, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days) is great. Especially for free games. 7 Days a Skeptic is my favorite.

yeah, i loved the first half of the game - the puzzles were great, george was as fun as ever and everything was very nicely paced
but i felt it fell apart in the last few hours, the puzzle quality became a little inconsistent, many of the characters had far too much personality - so much so that they felt more charicature than character (yeah, this exists in most games of the genre, and is often great, but it spoilt the feel for me in bs4), and the entire plot was based around one question - who is she? - and it just didn't do a good job of holding my interest
i was a little overly critical i guess, i do like the game a lot, and it's probably better than broken sword 3... there's just some flaws that really bother me
anyway, great series - would definitely welcome a broken sword 5Â
Let's see, Runaway 2 just came out and is as good as the first one. Broken Sword 4 came out not too long ago and is as good as the first three. I disagree with the others that do not call Dreamfall: The Longest Journey a point and click game. It can be played with the mouse and keyboard. Yes it was on the consoles as well, but it plays fine on the PC. Just wish they had not put in the lame fight sequences.
The first Longest Journey is still one of the best adventure games ever. The first Syberia is a great game with lots of fun and challenging puzzles. The second one was a little stiff in my opinion, but not bad. A Moment of Silence had a great story, but some of the puzzles were very difficult with little to guide you.
Lastly, the Sam and Max Episodes are pretty good, although a bit on the short side. And any of the re-released Sierra "Quest" games are loads of fun, and will show off the evolution of adventure games. Whatever you do, stay away from King's Quest 8, as it killed King's Quest. Trust me on this.
