Hi guys and gals,

The 'Game Request' thread over on the general gaming section seems to be flooded with console gamers and I've not yet had any response at all amidst the sea of "What do I get? GTA IV or InFamous manzzz!?!?!oneone!1".

So, I'm hoping there's a better class of people here! ;)

I've got a bit of time on my hands, and want to dedicate some of it to PC gaming.

So, I'm looking for a PC game. Not a specific game but a specific 'type' of game, or at least something as close as I can get.

I've got a craving for a strategy OR RPG (or Strategy RPG!) game that, at it's core, requires you to capture/recruit characters, train them up and then use them on 'your side'. Ideally in a 'building an army' sort of way, or building a 'squad' but with each recruited character having it's own specific 'profile' and not just "You have recruited 1000 swordsmen...etc." unless the character can be promoted to the head of a department, unit or 'office' within the game. Whether this is first person, top down, isometric, third person - it doesn't matter. Whether it's a strategic shooter, turn based shooter, total RPG - I don't mind. Ideally, I'd love it to have a modern or WW2 style setting, but it's flexible providing the recruitment is in there somewhere!

It doesn't have to have great graphics, though I'd like it to have 'some' i.e. not text based.

Now, I know that this is going to (hopefully, anyway!) generate a huge list - so I'll list the 'main' ones I've already played:

Jagged Alliance Series
Fallout Series (though the character recruitment is on too small a scale)
Mass Effect Series (but as above with Fallout)
Dragon Age Series (but as above with Fallout)
Romance of The Three Kingdoms Series

I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but those above are ones I've definitely played and I'll let you know if there are any others as and when the suggestions come in!

basically your looking for something like fire emblem??

well thats a tough nut to crack

umm warcraft III's SP has some of this

as would wh40k: dowII but this isnt like super noticeable or vast and expansive

tesIV oblivion + shivering isles offers similar stuffs in its expansion content.

you might also dig the myth series by bungie but its a bit.. constrivtive and is VERY hard. like if i were to put this into perspective for you. imagine playing advanced wars days of ruin's final sp level without the ability to make new units.

Well, I think you should definitely give the Spellforce series a chance, IMO is about as RPG as an RTS can get (although the cutscenes and voice acting isn't exactly top notch). "Drgonshard" & "Warlords Battlecry 3" are also RTS with strong RPG elements so you might give them a try as well. These are all geared towards fantasy, so if thats not your thing than you probably won't like them.

As for WWII or modern themed RTS or RTS/RPG hybrids, I can't offer any suggestion there. Still, I think that everyone who is a fan of the WWII setting should try out the Commandos series. Yes, I know they are RTT and not RTS but I've found that a lot of RTS fans like the series just the same (me being one of them). I'm also counting on the fact that you've played and enjoyed the Jagged Alliance series, which tells me you do like a bit of tactics with your RTS. So if you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend that you do.

If you like the Commandos series be sure to try out the Desperados series & Robin Hood : The Legend Of Sherwood (different settings, similar gameplay to Commandos but with lower complexity).

P.S.: When you mentioned having played the Fallout series I assume you've also played Fallout Tactics; it's a game that's too often overlooked by people who want to experience the series and is unjustly criticized by a lot of Fallout fans IMO. The game definitely gave me a Jagged Alliance feel when I first played it, and although the recruiting isn't as fun and there are not that many potential squad members to chose from, it's still a fun (and sometimes quite challenging game to play).

Good luck with your search and I hope you find some games to suit your craving!

Mass Effect 2 maybe. During the game you have to recruit a select list of people to form a team and basically in the end your actions throughout the story determine whether they live to the end or not.

Try to shorten it down and get to the point, then it will create more answers.

SpellForce is the closest I can think without getting into turn-based games. Also give Dragonshard a shot, that's got some great RPG-Strategy gameplay. If you want to go way back and play a classic, try out Dungeon Keeper 1/2

He gave plenty of details for people to help him out. I suggest Elemental. From what Kozzy says in the "What were you just playing..." topic, it's a strategy/ RPG game.
