Looking for an RTS or two

Haven't played an RTS properly in a few years and looking to pick 1 or 2 up and need some recomendations

- around the medieval time period, but doesnt have to be as long as its not like company of heroes sort of thing :)

- reasonably up to date (i guess no older than 2005)

i get mixed up in all the expansions and what not, so finding one is hard.

Age of Empires III maybe? It's not exactly medieval, but it's still fun enough. Do you meant you don't want gunpowder?
