I believe that game is called Supreme Commander. Still retails at 50$ and with the new patch optimization is excellent. www.wikipedia.org check out out type in Supreme Commander.

If there ever was a game that fit your needs, it would be Supreme Commander. Only thing is you'll need a beefy PC, though the latest patch did help.

Medieval 2 Total War, if your PC can't run it try Rome Total War.

try homeworld 1(release in 2000) or homeworld 2(release in 2003).Both have huge 3d space battles and also a great history and the best of all is that they don´t require a powerful PC:)

My year old machine runs its very well after the patch. They should have had that patch with release and the game would of gotten a better rating.

Since your not lookign for supreme commander. Maybe homeworld 1&2.

Supreme Commander not for you? How about its predecessor - Total Annihilation then?!! Can't think of any other large scale RTS games? Oh, the Total War series maybe?

LOTR: Battle for middlearth II. I enjoyed this game more than total war. Remember to try the demos before dropping the $.

And if you haven't tried Company of heroes, your missing out. It's not middle ages, but its arguably the best RTS ever made.

Medieval Total War: 2, the army size depends on your PC.

Indeed it depends on your PC specs. If it isn't too bad try Medieval 2 total war. If it's not that good try Rome: Total war.

If you are interested in Rome: Total War or Medieval 2: Total War, keep in mind that they are not typical RTS games.  In single player, you do fight large tactical/strategic battles in real time, but there is also a sort of turn-based  component where you have to build up your cities, manage your economy, and so forth.  It is a bit more complicated than most RTS games, but it is fun if you take the time to figure it all out.
