The best horror games for the PC are relatively old:

  • Alien vs. Predator 2
  • Clive Barker's Undying
  • System Shock 2

However, for just plain creep-factor, you can't go wrong with American McGee's Alice.

I'd recommend F.E.A.R., it's an excellent game, action packed and scary as hell.

If you want a good atmospheric horror game that is NOT a shooter, then give Scratches a try. Read the GS review and then understand that they have no taste in adventure games.

Why not include System Shock 2?! It's the one other game that makes this pedigree lineage complete!

I'd go with Undying. Doom 3 is pretty creepy as well, until you realize you repetitive it is. Stalker definitely has some scary moments. F.E.A.R? Sure it has creepy moments, but 95% of the time it was just a FPS....Don't get me wrong, I loved the game....I just wouldn't call it a scary one.

It is quite an intense game at times, with a few scares here and there.

The human campaign, much like the first movie, can definitely be viewed as belonging in the horror genre. It may not be a 'modern' horror movie with splashing gallons of gore and entrails at you...but in the sense that any moment something could pop out of air-ducts/shadows/ceiling/what-have-you and kill you before you can pull the trigger. Knowing that you're at the bottom of the food chain when you play the human campaign...now *that's* horrifying.

No, get overture first, then Black Plague. The plot is essential. Very underrated survival horror gem.

The original AVP is much scarier but the second is a better game overall. Id pick up both if you can.

Yes of course you should play Overture first but I think Black Plague is a much better game, mostly because you have no weapons... Makes it a whole lot scarier.

I still want to play those. I played the demos, but not the full game. Very atmospheric in the demos.

Thief 1-3. biggest_loser

Agreed, although i've yet to play 1 and 2. Thief 3 is not your typical 'Boo! Blood everywhere, Zombies walking around, torn body pieces....blah blah'. It's more like 'What was that? It better be human. Is that someone moving in the shadows? Whose footsteps are those? They're definitely not mine. That sounds like somebody laughing.' It's little things like these that keeps you on the edge of your seats. It ain't a straight-faced horror but it sure is disturbing.

going to look at Alice. i saw the trailer on TV a few years ago and it looked cool. cool idea to, Alice grows up and goes insane so wonderland becomes nightmareland. Would it be better if i read Alice in Wonderland first? the only thing i know about it is what i got from Kingdom Hearts.

anyone know if the 1950s alice movie is like the book? cuz teh book is long...at least alot longer than i want it to be. and the other two movies aren't animated and they look soooooooooooo gay...i'm guessing that knowing the original story will let me have a beter understanding of teh game...

Penumbra, FEAR, Bioshock, and Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines creeped me out. Especially VT:M.

As for Alice, the story is pretty understandable as long as you have a basic knowledge of Lewis Carol's story.

yeah, i read a first few chapters of wonderland online but i going to get ahold of the '99 movie which has both books and is supposed to be just like the books. Already have Alice too just waiting for movie from my friend. And i can't wait for the 2009 movie based on Alice, and theres also supposed to be a new Alice game in '09 but it's not confirmed if it's an Alice remake or a movie game. I hope it's a remake cuz no matter how good movies are the games always suck.

Alice is cool, up to the part where you swim with turtle and i thought about something...Alice is the main character. the white queen is good and teh red queen is evil...i think the guy who wrote the story for the Resident Evil movies liked wonderland. and on top of that wonderlan alice is english and the red queen in RE has an english accent AND they are both little girls...

It's not really scary, but it's creepy and very intense.

Resident Evil 4. It can be a little scary at first, but for the most part you won't be really afraid since you're going to be spending a ton of time killing everything. If you're getting the PC version, a gamepad is a must.

otherwise, I heard the Penumbra games are pretty scary
