Why not ports?

Valkyria Chronicles and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky are the best I've played on PC and they are both ports. There aren't many outside of Indy offerings that are made specifically for PC at present and I've not found any Indy ones that are that good.

I have to second Trails in the Sky. Sure, it's also on the PSP, but keep in mind that the PC version was the original one. It was made with PCs in mind. It doesn't have an epic, sweeping story - instead focusing on character relationships whilst it sets up plot seeds for the future.

Are there any hidden gems among the deluge of RPG Maker games on Steam? Someone talented has to have used that software at some point. That might be an interesting place to look for not-quite-J-but-close-rpgs.

I've been on a hunt for JRPGs on PC lately, actually started yet another play-through on FF7 lol but I'll have to try Trails.

Trails is great and among my all time favourite JRPG's, well worth playing. My only gripe with it is the way the camera angle changes when you leave a building, did my head in a bit. It's a fantastic game though so don't let that put you off.

I can't speak for the game itself as I've not played it extensively, but I can vouch for the quality of the porting on this game. Runs well (and very stably) on a wide range of set-ups. The 360 version was mirred with a lot of technical issues that were thankfully fixed for the PC release.

What would you class as not feeling like a port? If you don't mind playing with a controller then The Last Remnant, Trails in the Sky: FC and Valkyria Chronicles are all great choices. But only the last one is really solid with keyboard and mouse controls.
