I've been out of the high end computer loop for a few years and I was looking to get a gaming desktop. I've done some reading and think I've found a good system, but I wanted to make sure before I go for it.

Here are the specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6600 2.4GHz

Genuine Windows XP Media Center 2005

2 GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM 677MHz (2 DIMMs)

320 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
320 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)

1GB NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 Dual-GPU Graphics Card

Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic, w/Dolby Digital 5.1

16X DVD ROM Drive
16X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability

Is this good enough to run Crysis, Gears, etc and not get too obsolete in a few years

Thanks

dont listen to this guy, that card is great unless you want to play the latest dx10 games, but there arent any. 7950gx2 is slightly better than the 8800gts but not the gtx

If I want to go with an 8800, is it ok to sacrifice on the processor; ie, a core 2 1860 rather than a 2400

Edit; one more question, what is the functional difference between the core 2 2400 and the core 2 quad core 2400?

IF you can still find a 7950GX2, don't get it! The 8800GTS isfaster in most games and supports DX-10 and costs less.

Use that link and check specific games and resolutions you play to see where one card is better than the other...

And if you want the best there is, that would currently be the 8800TGX... at least until November or later...

Thanks for the link, I believe that the 8800gtx is the way to go, but what about processor power

The E6550 or E6750 dual core processors aregreat bang for the buck processors right now... If you have more to spend, you could go with the Q6600 quad core. Either option can be overclocked to get even better value, but I would get faster 800MHz RAM for that (about the same price anyway) and a great CPU cooler to help with the overclock for about $20 is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

It's been said already...but I'll say it as well. Go with PC6400 memory (minimum), loose the XP Media Center Edition for Vista Home Premium (recommend duel booting it with older version of Windows) and pick up a 8800GTX. If you want to save bucks, loose one of the hard drives, the Sound Blaster and go with an E6320. The E6320 can easily reach 2.4Ghz (stock E6600 speed) without breaking a sweat. Later, you can upgrade the proc to a better Penryn core chip, if you feel you need the extra horse power. Did I miss it somewhere, or did you neglect to tell us what motherboard you're runnin'?

EDIT - Having just checked the prices on the E6320 and E6550, I have to take it back. The E6550 IS the better way to go. :)
