I liked KOTOR, KOTOR 2 and NWN2 less, and Oblvion least of the bunch.  I just lose interest in games without a well-written plot and decent voice acting, regardless of visuals.  Any recommendations?

Well if you want to try an online role play I would suggest giving SWG a try. I thinkits awesome and addicting. There is a free 14 game trial so you really should check it out.

Planescape: Torment. It's an older game and I don't remember if there was much voice acting. I think there was mostly text. The game world was very cool & unique as were the characters.  The game does not take place in your typical fantasy setting. Edit: I forgot to add that the gameplay is similar to the Nights of the Old Republic games & the Neverwinter Nights games, so it'll be something you're used to.

Unfortunately, this game is rare. I was just looking on Amazon and it was priced around $37. I remember seeing it at Best Buy and it was between $5 & $10 but that was a couple of years ago.

Grim Fandango! More of an adventure game, but worth playing non-the-less.

I'll give it a shot--I don't really care about voice acting in general, just bad voice acting (aka end of NWN2)

Kotor 1 & 2, or NWN 1 and 2.

They will keep you busy for a while.

Hmm...I'm not even close to the end. So far the voice acting has been all right. I hope it won't be that bad when (if) I reach the end.

I don't remember how the quality of the voice acting in Planescape: Torment was. Too bad there's no demo.

It's got a fairly great cast of voice-actors, but the voice acting was only heard in important sections - it had to be, there was a hell of a lot of dialogue!

Back on topic, given the TC's list, Torment is the best option, as it was made by some of the guys who made KOTOR2 and NWN2 (although Torment is much, much better than either of those, in that the story actually has an ending :D).

The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series focus a lot on storyline, although as with Planescape: Torment a lot of the dialogue is text only (the voice acting that is done is pretty good). In BG/BG2 there's also several sub-plots and tons of sub-quests.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines is awesome!simonbenoot

totally, i only started playing it myself on friday (so, so glad i did) but i am crazy about this game so far

there's not much combat or character development in the traditional rpg manner, it's all about the actual roleplaying, everything in the game is there to facilitate it... it's more like a computer based version of a pen and paper roleplayer than it is a rpg computer game - and it's easily the best rpg i've ever played so far for it

the characterisation is incredible and the voicework is just about the best i've experienced in a game -  i think i'm in love...

Planescape: Torment has the best storyline of any game ever.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is also good.
Divine Divinity is also heavily roleplaying orientated with good voice acting and a semi-decent plot.
KotOR you have already played. :)

Baldur's Gate 2 is an obvious choice, but I'll also suggest Summoner 1 and 2. The premise itself isn't very imaginative, but the execution of the plot in both is quite remarkable. The gameplay is a bit contrived but they story and the lore behind it is what sold it for me. The second one in particular is very surreal and abstract, whereras the first one draws more upon religious myths.

Neverwinter Nights 2 has a mediochre story and bad art direction.

To the threadstarter: You might want to check out Hordes of the Underdark. It's hack n' slash orientated but both the dialogue and story are well presented. Definitely go for Planescape: Torment first though.

And if you want something a little more recent, and haven't played the console veriosn, you might conisder Jade Empire. Granted, it does not have the same depth as Plansescape or Baldurs gate, but at least it won't baffle your mind with the "quality" of the graphics in those old games.
(I thought the quality was great when they were released, but face it: it was *years* ago)

I played the Xbox version of Jade Empire. What it lacked in it's combat engine and deeper roleplaying qualities it made up for in it's storyline and atmosphere. It is to KotOR what Icewind Dale is to Baldurs Gate, and isn't a bad game at all.

Just make sure you download the last official patch and the last unoficial patch and you should love this game.  If you are looking for a good story and feel this game is it.

try Dreamfall: the Longest Journey 2 - it's much more an adventure game than an rpg but the story is awesome - with great voice acting - except i heard the ending was one of those evil cliffhangers - and if you happen to still have a gamecube lying around pick up Tales of Symphonia - it's a great rpg with a great but slightly cliche filled story

Well why not pick "The Longest Story" up first. I think that it was better game than Dreamfall. The story was great, but as you said: it is not a RPG.

Here's another Planescape: Torment recommendation. Unique setting, brilliant story, great characters, it has it all. Plus Morte the talking, floating skull = instant win. If you can't find it anywhere, but really want to play it, they do have it on Gametap along with some other great RPGs such as Baldur's Gate II.

Shadow Hearts (no voice acting 'cept in the CG cutscenes but an awesome story that's well thought out - can be pretty difficult too sometimes especially near the end if you just fly through the game)

Shadow Hearts: Covenant (has great voice acting - imo - a remarkable story too --- this one is 10x easier than the first one and is a lot more fun too)

both of these games are filled with crude humor that's hysterical and also have unique casts of characters...

it's one of my favorite rpg series ^^

Wow I can't believe that noone mentioned the Fallout Series. A Post Nuclear Apocyptic Game with the best voice actors and including Ron Pearlman. Oh my. I am disapointed in you all.
