hey all,

my birthday is comming up next ween and I am looking to get a laptop, my limit is around 800, after looking around I can't find anything that beats teh specs of this Acer Aspire 15.6" notbook

Is this worth the price or is there something I am missing here. This is not for games (although I probably will play more cpu intensive games on it).

I am happy to buy online if there is a deal somewhere else that I am missing, howevern not second hand or on ebay (and preferbly in Australia unless shipping keeps it around $800) obviously a quick response will be great as I do not know how long htis sale lasts :)

looks great for the price, only thing is it probably has a crappy screen, but I'm sure it will be ok. Not sure what acer build quality is like but they seem to be decent. a 640 and i7 with 4gb ram sound pretty good for the price. Is the ram easily upgradable? I'd want at least 8gb ram as 1gb of that 2gb vram is probably shared and even 4gb is pretty low for modern apps.

I can't really find anything about its custom ability for the ram, but currently I think this is something I will have to sacrifice for my price range. The screen is my biggest worry, but again... price. I would really like to know how much this resolution matters or if it is more an annoyance and performance is better, as I will not be playing it for gaming for the most part (just like to have the option for low end games)

Most laptops seem to allow ram to be upgraded, some easier than others. Depending on the ram config you should be able to easily chuck in a 4gb stick for something around $40 or so. I probably has a single 4gb chip. To be honest unless you a running apps say like photoshop 1366 x 768 is fine and makes text more readable. the 1080p display on my laptop 15" laptop while it's glorious text on websites can be a bit on the small side. The main thing you'll lose is viewing angles on cheap displays and it will probably be horrible gloss (can't stand it) While I would pick a higher res if you had the option you won't get it unless you add around $500 to your budget.
