Ive been looking around for a nice graphics card. Ive looked at several sites like newegg and compusa and i found the XFX GeForce 8400GS 256MBto be a good buy. Im not looking for top of the line graphics just something that will give me nice frame rates and nice visuals on games like WoW and Guild Wars. I recently got Gears of War for the PC and it looks like crap on my comp. I was wondering if this card could handle the game with medium-high settings and still maintain a good frame rate. Also how much wattage would you need for this card? Here is a link to the card on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150257. Thx for the help. :)

That card is simply awful for gaming.Don't get me wrong I'm sure it could handle WOW ,but any recently released games(ie gears)its really going to struggle with. 64 BIT memory bus FTL.

I wouldn't go for anything less than an 8600GT. However, don't expect to run Gears of War all that well, although it'll obviously run much better than what you have now. The 8600GT should be enough for older games like Guild Wars, WoW, etc.

This link (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2970&p=6) shows how the 8600GT performs in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, which is a very demanding DX9 game. As you can see, it performs reasonably well at lower resolutions. I think you'll get decent performance in Gears of War as long as you play in DX9 mode.

Can't go wrong at that price. The XFX one seems way overpriced, look at all the other 8400GS on newegg. You're paying way more for 2 DVI outputs, unless I'm missing something, don't look at low-end cards too often. Would probably go for the 8600GT anyway tho, still only like $75 after rebate.

Get a 8600GT or HD 2600XT,or even a HD 2600Pro which destroys 8400GS,but preferably 8600GT or HD 2600XT.

Is there really a major diference between the different companies like MSI, XFX, or PNY?

Different warranties,and some come Pre-Overclocked,Passive Cooling,free game,etc

Out of those brands,XFX has the best warranty (Double Lifetime Warranty) but IMHO thats useless because the card will usually be LONG obsolete before it gives out.

EVGA has the best support, BFG is usually overclocked (but expensive) and certain cards come with free games. I like EVGA first since they're also usually the cheapest.

In terms of performance, not really. XFX generally overclock better, and cover your part if you do overclock and damage it, and also give double lifetime warranties. Probably come in a nicer package with more contents. In the higher end gfx cards the better brands are usually only marginally more expensive, so worth paying the extra $10-20. In the low-end market not worth paying so much more, wouldn't care too much about a $40 card personally, if it lasted a year that'd easily be my money's worth.
