We have a couple of computers at home, but they don't want to play newer games due to pixel shading and other high end technical "stuff" Can some of you experts look at the following and let me know what if this would be a good option for newer games? If not - what would need to be changed. I have limited funds so the cost was a factor (less than 800). I don't want it to be out of date next year. (Also looing at getting a laptop for my daughter to use for speech augmentation - if anyone has any ideas - send 'em on).

Thanks!

Will this laptop primarily be used for games? If so, then laptops are NOT the path to take; desktop computers are FAR more effective and cheaper than laptops when dealing with gaming. If not, then that laptop looks good to go.

For $800, you'll be lucky the laptop isn't out of date at the time you buy it. You are also stuck with the video card for the life of the laptop and cannot change/upgrade it. I focus on the video card because it has the most impact on a system's gaming ability. The 8600M GT is about as good as you can get for $800. It can all of today's games, but it is not especially fast.

Word. You'd be better off getting a desktop for gaming, and use the money you save to get a simple lappy for work/school.

I would love to get a gaming PC for $1000US - let's start there - detail what I need to spec out to get that and then go from there. Between son, hubby and I we like a variety of games - want to play newer games - From what I've read, if Crysis will run, then it should be good for a while - is this right?

Build it yourself from parts @ www.newegg.com if you are on a budget. If you absolutely don't want to build, look at this site: www.cyberpowerpc.com

Parts I would personally reccomend for a budget build:

EVGA 650i Ultra mobo

c2d e6750 cpu

8800gt - cheapest one you can find

500w psu - (antec, thermaltake, corsair, earthwatts)

2gb's (g. skill, crucial, corsair)

Western Digital 160gb hd

Dual layer cd burner

Antec Nine Hundred or p190 case

Should come out around $800 I would imagine... Good luck!

I'm fine with building one - heck I was building amplifiers from scratch 30 years ago - lol

two questions - is there anything worth salvaging from my existing PC above?

What do I need to add? (I also have another case I could use, mobo was zapped)

Thanks!

I doubt you can swap parts from your previous laptop to a new desktop because the components are so different. If you can manage to get Windows Vista from your laptop, then do that.

Here is a very good PC that will play all games maxed except for Crysis for $999. You might save $100 if you build it yourself...

PC Gaming isn't nearly as expensive as a lot of people think it is,sure it won't max out Crysis, but there are OTHER games APART from Crysis, and Crysis still looks decent on medium settings.

And if you want Vista,it'd still be under $600.
