I am currently running a Pentium E5200 Dual-Core 2.5GHz. I made the mistake of buying a brand computer (Dell) so I cannot overclock it.

I want to buy an Intel Core 2 Quad. My motherboard has the right socket (LGA 775) so that's not a problem, but is there anything else I need to know that might conflict with me getting a quad-core cpu?

What processor you can install is dependent on more than just the socket, you also need a supporting chipset. Can you find out what chipset your motherboard is using?

You have to know what cpus can your motheboard use, if its old and cheap i dont think it will support the brand new ones.

i would recomend getting a new motherboard and processor if you can afford it...of course if it is a prebuilt then you have to worry about if the psu can handle the new hardware and then if the old motherboard had an on board gpu you need to get a gpu....awww screw it build a new computer...if you get it on black friday an excelent build can be had for arround 800 tops

how would you find that out? I don't know what type of motherboard I have or who made it.

by the way, I already have a 400watt corsair PSU and an nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 512.

I do not have $800, only around $200 for a new CPU.

Download CPU-Z, run it, and then on the mainboard tab you should be able to find chipset information.

based on the little information you have given so far am i to assume you have a dell inspiron 530s computer (its a dell and it runs a E5200 and is the only dell i could find that does so it was my best guess) if so then yes it can run the Core 2 Quad but that would be where it caps off.

Yes, I do have an inspiron 530.

In cpu-z it says the mainboard chipset is Intel P35/G33/G31

What's wrong with the e5200? You bought a prebuilt so I highly doubt getting a new cpu without a new gpu would increase performance noticeably, What card do you have? a 8600GT? 9600GT? Or something else? You'll only see a performance increase if you plan on running a large amount of programs at the same time.

Well I have an 8800GTS 512. I want to upgrade to a quad core to make some game run smoother and to future proof my PC. I am eventually going to get a better GPU and PSU but I do not have the money to do it all at once.
