Even though my system is fairly strong (could use a stronger am2 processor but thats going to have to wait) I'm not just a graphics over gameplay/substance kind of guy. I also enjoy collecting things as well. (but not too crazy with spending tons on expensive stuff) I know that some of the lurkers on this board have been playing with their p.c's for a decade if not more and I was hoping for some recommendations on older games to look for. (Anything I can't find at BB, or stamp a store) The only kind of game I don't enjoy is rts.

Nobody? Come on. This is what makes the p.c awesome, backwards compatibility.

How old are we willing to go, here? Old, like early-90's-DOS-games old? Mid-to-late-90's-Win95/98 old? Early-XP-days old?

Like someone said, this list gets posted every day ^_^

Here are some of my favourite older games which I still enjoy today:

Deus Ex

Quake III

Roller Coaster Tychoon

Aliens vs Predator (can be tricky to run under XP)

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (not that well known, anime first person shooters from the makers of F.E.A.R. and N.O.L.F.)

Tomb Raider II: Dagger of Xian (loved it :P)

Driver (game where you drive away from cops, it was pretty fun, bad sequels)

Midtown Madness I / II (also driving games)

KotOR I & II (RPGs)

System Shock 2

Diablo II: LoD

I know I forgot a ton but I'm too lazy to go look at my old boxes atm

Can't edit for some reason. I know you said no RTS games, but this one is a bit different and doesnt involve any resource gathering:

Myth II: Soulblighter

This game has what is probably my favourite narrative in any game ever. The story isn't exceptional and the actual method of storytelling is simple but it turns out soooo great. Maybe you can play it with cheats or something because it's really worth experiencing (most of the story is told before the missions).

The first one is supposedly also good, haven't played it

If you're a space flight sim kind of guy at all, you should check out Freespace2 and the community engine upgrades at www.hard-light.net. They have the game looking utterly fantastic for something that came out in '99. :)

Oh, and I'll second the suggestion for the Baldur's Gate series. :D

One of the most underrated games of all time is SWAT 4 Gold! The Gold edition includes The Stetchkov Syndicate expansion pack and is just excellent. I just got it myself and its really funny because I have all the new games, WiC, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Crysis Demo but guess what. I keep going back to SWAT 4 over all of them! The game is just so addictive and has so much replay ability. Infact I have only played 2 levels so far because I keep replaying them. You score an 80 and then you'll be out driving or something and just cant quit thinking of other ways you could try to do the mission better and get a better score. And because the bad guys are always in a different location its different every time.

SWAT 4 Gold with The Stetchkov Syndicate is just AWSOME!

You know, I'm so tempted to buy Freespace 2. I own Freelancer and X3, but from much of what I read, Freespace 2 is the space sim to beat them all. What makes this game superior to the others (graphics are of no concern)?

steam has a lot of great old games, like x-com 2 and deus ex and quake. baldur's gate 1 + expansion, 2 + expansion, fallout 1 & 2, most of luscarts adventure games and kotor 1 & 2, any sierra/dyanmix adventure games (space quest, king's quest, quest for glory, leisure suit larry, phantasmagoria, etc.), wizardry and ultima series, heroes of might and magic, master of magic, betrayal at krondor, and so on and so on. really, there are so many classics that it's an impossibility to list them all.

For starters, you don't have to buy it. It's freeware.

I've had a lot of luck on goozex.com which is a game trading service. Each trade is $1 and the point value of the game which varies, but is generally 100 to 300 points for older games. You can get points by trading games that you have in or you can get an initial pool of points by purchasing them. Its pretty cool and I've gotten 10-15 games this way. Check out the site and let me know what you think.

Well, since no one has mentioned it, the Myst series is really good.
