Basically I'm looking for a netbook for school. Preferably able to play music, movies, and a little photo editing. So I'm just wondering if maybe I should step up to cheap laptops, or what I should be looking for in a netbook.

Well, I am on my netbook right now 1005ha, which to my knowledge has the best lcd on a netbook, 1000:1 contrast ratio, most have like 200:1 http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3622 It is slow, it came with Windows 7, then I just put some nice Ubuntu on it, and it is very fast. It does struggle though playing 720p, but it can play 720p in Windows XP, yes Windows XP's performance is much better than 7's. Mine came with 7, I just dual boot with Ubuntu and XP. The reason you can play 720p in XP, is because coreavc if for XP, I recommend you purchase it, it's like 15$. If you want more power, you get a netbook with an ion gpu, which is like a 9400mgs.

I have a Dell Mini 9 Hackintosh with 2GB RAM, probably the best investment I have made regarding computers since I use it a lot for work and don't have to lug around a larger Macbook Pro. Plus it is funny to mess with people that have Mac's and love to show them off. It has the Intel GMA950 in it which Dell downclocked but a few simple terminal commands and the core goes back to default and viewing HD media on Hulu or Youtube actually works fine.

Look for a netbook that has excellent battery life. I'd recommend one of the Asus or MSI netbooks :D

I've read that the HP Mini 311 was pretty good because of its Nvidia Ion chip.

I would regard ION as an essential part of it if you plan on watching flash videos.

Well, one of the disadvantages of most Netbooks are: 1. The speed of the HDD, which actually slows down over time due to a HDD's poor ability to handle fragmented data and its physical read/write limitation of blocks on a smaller and smaller track once the HDD gets fuller (more tracks closer to the center of the HDD the fuller the HDD becomes) 2. The small screen size, typically 10 inch. I highly recommend to get a 13 inch netbook with a SSD... which will give you all the portability advantages of a normal netbook, while eliminating the speed problem of the HDD (by a factor of 30) and in addition making all you data more secure against shock, vibration, EM fields etc (65 x more robust than a HDD). Currently they are only a few companies out there selling 13 inch netbooks and the ones with SSDs are expensive, but some smaller companies have a few good solutions... Just run a basic search for a 13 inch Netbook with SSD and you will come across a few sites... I heard there is a good one in Europe.
