So a friend of mine and I are having a great time playing Splinter Cell together. It's a great game.

It's definately a lot more fun if you have more players though so we invited a couple of our other friends to play. They said "We're not interested, we're happy with World of Warcraft."

It's not like we were asking them to raid two nights a week or something, it was just something to do occasionally for fun, and it's not as though the game is expensive either, Chaos Theory is only $8 on Amazon at the moment. That's half the price of a month of WoW.

I realized though that I haven't done much with those friends we asked for more than a year now. We used to hang out every weekend and now we hardly ever talk. I've lost them to World of Warcraft.

Has anyone else had this problem? Post your stories here.

Yea, I recently went back to WOW to see him/play with him, but he puts all priority on his guild, he doesn't even come on IM anymore. It's all priority to the guild and nothing but the guild. It's a real damn shame, so I'm just soloing through the game.

I actually played for two years, and it became the same thing for me. He didn't want to do arenas with me because I was undergeared, and it was all about raiding with the guild.

Yea, I lost some friends to WoW also. All they do was play WoW and hang out online with their guild. It is really sad.

Yup! My CSS clan was getting ready for the new season of CAL and getting extremely good at scrimming, until the leader and a few others went back to WOW and abandoned CSS :-\ /cry

Interesting topic. I've never lost any friends to WoW, but I've recently been trying out a couple of different MMOs and I can see how some friends might lose me...MMOs are huge time sinks. I've been playing Warhammer since about the time of its release. It's a lot of fun, but not worth losing touch with the real world and your friends and family. I canceled my subscription today. I'll still be able to play it for a couple of weeks...I love the game, but time and the friends you spend it with are way more important than a video game.

I never lost any real friends from wow, although I knew my brothers friends and they became my friends in the game, later on all they care about is the game and their raids, they only talk to me about loot and never play arena /bgs with me when they are doing dailies /grinds for their raids...

I lost real friends because my family moved to a new city, its a ******* shame that I find it pretty difficult to find frineds(good friends) now because most have enough friends and I don't have much if any free time on the university. My friends are my family members and colleges at the Uni., Epic Fail !

I had a friend named Bert who used to play with the kids in the street, help them build go karts, race them, make tree houses and stuff, until he started playing that devil game World of Warcraft.

Soon after he started playing, there were no longer kids playing in the street in their go karts, no kids swinging on their tree swings and playing in their tree houses because those tree houses had been neglected and fallen apart.

After a while, he put on a lot of weight, and as a result of stayng up for what became 2 weeks of non-stop WoW raiding without sleep, he drank so much coffee. Due to his weight, he decided to switch to artificial sweetner in his coffee. The amount of coffee he drank, along with that sweetner caused him to get cancer.

He died earlier this year from it.

I helped my friend's family sue Blizzard however (I am currently voted and awarded the best lawyer in the country), for mental damages they inflicted upon him which drew him to a the life he lost and to the life he changed to.

I settled out of court (which is why you don't read it in media)with Blizzard for the sum of $6.233 million US dollars, which his mother and I split. I now live in a rather luxurious house in the tropics.

Hurdee hur hur.

2327 / 24 = 96.958 days

97 days / 365 days = .265 years

75 years (average (I'm assuming) american male lifespan) / .265 years = 283.018

1/283 of your life has been spent playing World of Warcraft...and those are just the hours counted by Xfire.

Now let that sink in gooood and deap.

But yes, I've lost quite a few good friends to WoW. I'll hate the game forever.

haha, absolutely hilarious...

Anyways..

To all the people blaming World of Warcraft they should be blaming themselves or their friends. People need to have self control. WoW like every good thing is only good in moderation. Blaming WoW takes the blame off what should be the people..

..... wrong ... raiding is not built for self control ... in order to raid you have to be an extreme player .... it is Blizz who put this in the game and requires people to play for 3 to 4 hrs at a time multiple times a week ...

don't start talkin self control ... the game has its negatives that are built in

Exactly.

If you want to talk about self-control with WoW, the only self-control there is, is to stop playing or quit entirely. You HAVE to be in certain raids for a period of time, whether it be 2 hours or 5 hours. Especially if you're a tank or some healer (ugh), you gotta suck it up and finish the fight. I say this so many times. I can tell right off the bat who is hardcore/extreme or casual. And the casual WoW players will come in here and say WoW isn't life draining, it isn't demanding blah blah blah. I dont' want to hear it. It's TOO obvious, that they never raided in their life. 5 man heroics dont count, and even those are lengthy enough for one session. Try raiding new dungeons that may take the whole evening because you're learning new bosses and making new strategies. Moderation = casual. Those people that hang out on their bridge with their draenei girlfriends, or fish for stonescale eel while everyone is trying to down a boss. Pfftt....

crazymaghie123 is absolutely right peaple should have self control when they are reaching that situation, and that phenomenon doesn't appear only on WoW.

I understand it's a phenomemon that isn't exclusive to WoW, but no other game is quite the phenomenon that WoW is.

I have one friend who insists that there's nothing wrong with the way he plays because he's got 10 million other people doing it too.

Is this just another thread trying to make some arguement against WoW? I dont get it honestly. I wouldnt be surprised if everyone who posts their sob stories about losing friends to WoW, or even losing themselves to WoW are just rival game developers looking to discredit a good game.

If you really lost friends to WoW, then why would you want to be friends with them? If they are so weak they cant put their friends above some game then they really arent great friends. Your probably better off without them.

I have lost two friends of mine due to WoW, and they have been playing it since release. Last summer they did nothing but play the game and refuse to go out because they had raids everyday. One of them still plays it, its a shame because he does nothing but play it and sleep. This summer some friends and i decided to go and wake him up so we could go outside and have some fun but even then he sat without a shirt playing it and didn't want to go out.

That's a pretty objective approach to friendship, and if you look at people that way you're probably a crappy friend yourself.

I like these guys, but the fact is, since WoW has come out that's all they want to do anymore.

You can chalk that up to it being a good game if you want.

I wont argue that the game isn't amazing in its own little ways, but it's definately not designed for casual play regardless of what Blizzard boasts.

I had a friend that starte dating a girl. 3 weeks later he got hooked on WoW. So that relationship lasted another 3 weeks before she got fed up with it.

You hear the stories about it happening online, but it's quite a thing to see.

I wont be bogged down by people hopelessly addicted to anything. Its the same if I had a friend who decided to take up drugs. I would try to help them, but if they were beyond helping, I see no reason to inconveniance myself further.

I may sound like a heartless bastard, but I help people whenever I can, and I am in fact very giving. But growing up with an alcoholic mother who we tried to help, to no result, I cant sympathize for anyone who is addicted to something and wont give it up even with help.

Look at WoW like...Vicodin. It helps greatly to relieve serious pain and allow people to function, but get addicted to it and its a horrible thing. If you find more comfort in vicodin than you do in your friends and family, then you shouldnt be surprised when they stop talking to you.

I'm not saying WoW isnt addictive, everything is. And too much of anything is bad. But you cant blame the game itself. If you do that then there is no hope in quitting. You need to look at yourself before taking the easy path and blaming the game.

At some point you're going to have to quit though, the game isn't a good thing in your life. An alchoholic beats alchoholism by weaning himself away from the habit. If it weren't for the alchohol, he wouldn't have his particular problem.

You could argue that it might be something else if it wasn't alchohol, but the fact is that it happens to be Alchohol.

As far as individual players go, if addiction is a serious problem, then the game is a problem for them.

If you really lost friends to WoW, then why would you want to be friends with them? If they are so weak they cant put their friends above some game then they really arent great friends. Your probably better off without them.

Myrkan

Pretty solid argument there.

I didn't know it was a WoW bashing thread. But thanks for telling us. Be sure to report the topic creator for trolling then.

That's alittle hard to beleive, seeing that you've played over 2000 hours of WOW

It's not trolling if everyone agrees.

That happened to me, only I was the friend who was lost to others. Not World of WarCraft, though. EverQuest. A much better game!

Essentially, I got into a high end raiding guild. I worked part time (the absolute minimum I had to to survive), slept as soon as I got home and raided all night with my American friends. I'm English so my night time was their peak gaming time, so I adjusted my sleeping pattern so I could raid.

I would wake up around 9pm and play through until about 7am, then get ready for work. Work, come home, sleep, wake up, EQ. Every day. I played around six thousand hours over two and a half years.

I systematically cut myself off from all my friends - both those in real life and my non-EQ playing internet friends, wihich has permanently ended many friendships. Not only did I lose my friends, I lost myself. The game consumed every aspect of my personality, leaving me little more than a husk of a person with an encyclopaedic knowledgeof EverQuest.

Whenever someone tried sparking a conversation with me, perhaps at work or at one of the rare family gatherings I attended, I literally wouldn't be able to react with anything other than topics related to EverQuest, which most people would have no understanding of or tolerance for. Due to my inactivity, I was also around 300lbs by the time I finally quit.

I am hesitant to use the word addicted; I don't believe computer game addiction is possible. I was, however, totally obsessed with the game. And it's an obsession that I truly believe I would have let kill me - or irreperably damage my health - had I kept on playing.

I am thankful to be able to report that I am healthy now, both mentally and physically, have been able to reconnect with many of my friendsand have developed some vague mimicry of an actual personality that almost apes something approaching normalcy.

I know (that is, I can imagine) it sucks to lose friends to an MMORPG, but from first hand experience I can say that any lost friends would regret the loss of friendship a lot more than you when they finally realise what they've let happen.

quite honestly I don't understand how people could misread what I put into this thread but at least one person got it ....

People if you did anything worthwhile in the game and was part of a 25 man raiding guild then you would understand that yes World of Warcraft the game itself and the way it was made is setup for you to have to spend too much time playing it .... did any of you ever raid ??? Seriously again to raid and get content done many a time you are putting in 4 hrs on raid night and alot of guilds that clear the whole expansion or original content are playing 4 or more days a week ...

is there

something

wrong with this picture !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

OMG ... use the head on your shoulders ... you can't clear the content without it being a timesink ...

Blizzard honestly did the gaming world a diservice by making this thing ... same with EQ and the rest

They say you don't have to raid but if you know the game who the heck for any game even wants to not get to the end of it ??? seriously !?!?!?!

DeViLzzz

Yup.

When I was playing I suggested that they created 5 man content with hour long instances that progressed in a similar fashion to raiding (You gear up and become able to do the next instance) but everyone scoffed at me and thought it was a dumb idea.

Personally I think they should take the Heroic instances and apply that difficulty level to every instance in the game. I mean who WOULDN'T want to do a level 70 VC run with all the mobs buffed and retooled just for that purpose?

Then they could add a legendary difficulty level to every instance, harder than Heroic. It's a good way to implement decent casual content without much resource cost.

But as it is people criticized me for "not being committed to the game" and last I checked I shouldn't have to be committed to any video game to "have fun."

And I do think Unreal summed up this thread. It is me /crying that some of my friends like WoW more than they like hanging out with me and my other friends.

Kind of sucks though. They're really missing out on a lot of other things that life has to offer.

From an outsider looking in, that sounds like one of the most amazing lifestyles I've ever heard of and sets a new definition for "hardcore raider"...congrats man :)

Ok this is my take on Warcraft. Personally i like the game a lot and i have been involved in raids etc. I can see where people are coming from sayin the game dominates people's lives but i dont think its as clear cut as that. Its not like black and white, warcraft addiction is a much more varied than your either addicted or not. I really enjoy the raiding myself but of course RL has to come first and raids do not have to be completed on the night ( thats why blizz gave a week). I'm no longer playing the game as i deceided to take a month or two break before trying out the expansion but i think people have to realise Warcraft is a complex addiction due to the fact that people might be addicted to their own character or mabye they just enjoy the social aspect of the game. Well thats my ideas on the game. Feel free to accept or reject, either is cool :D

I've lost a lot more friends to controlling boyfriends/girlfriends than MMOs. Sure it sucks but sometimes you can't do anything.

While your take contributed to the quality of the thread, and it is an interesting topic this site has a policy against bumping old threads.

If you have an interest in a topic and don't see an existing thread on the first 1-2 pages, feel free to start a new thread on the topic rather than re-opening one that has been long-inactive.
