lost HDD help.

Im in a little bit of trouble. My girlfriends computer crashed afew days ago and wouldnt boot, so she asked me to just reinstall windows on it. So I started the whole process, and once done turned out she wanted me ot install windows but without loosing any of her files. anyway, Im trying to recover as much as I can from the formatted hdd, and was wondering if anyone knows of any good free recovery programs?

It was formatted,,,,woops!

The only chance i can think of is attaching it as a secondary device to another computer and scanning it with Stellar Phoenix data recovery and search for deleted files.
