One could argue that LOTR started the popular fantasy genre (the books, mind you, not the game) and therefore WOW ripped of LOTR...  Orcs anyone?

I was merely saying that it POPULARIZED it, not innovated it...

Beside the fact that orcs were "already invented", before tolkien people woudlnt think of elves as tall slender creatures who loved the sea, they would think they were small dwarf sized people with high-pitched (aka santas helpers). And plus........ Tolkien DID invent Hobbits and everything from them. He also invented the Naz-Gul. He also re-invented trolls not to be small ugly creatures under bridges waiting to snatch a goat to eat, he made trolls huge bony creatures of war with incredible strength.

In many ways, Tolkien re-vived the fantasy industry.

I personally think both games are completely different.

As said before MMORPG's are a new genre of gaming and all will be similar somehow. But from my experience with both WoW:BC and LOTR:TSoA, I would say that LOTR did not rip anyone off. The interface, crafting and game engine are completely different.

I prefer WoW:BC over LOTR because of WoWs somewhat seamless gameplay, as well as fluid control and casting system. LOTR seems to be too clunky and cluttered for my taste, but, to each his/her own.

From what I've tried, they pretty much both suck. Mainstream garbage both of them. Too bad the old swg is gone for good, that game would kick the living blargh out of those 2 games.

Of course LOTR rips off WOW... which of course, rips off the trilogy novel Lord of the Rings for its entire universe.  Orcs, wizards, elfish archers, war machines, etc. almost all referenced or created by Tokien.

I completely agree with us, I can think of few successful MMOs without using the same gameplay as EQ, WoW or LOTRO. Their gameplay is (somewhat) simple and direct, and their new games attract players that don't need to completely re-figure-out the new game's controls. It enables the player to get right into the game without having to determine what button to press to bring up the inventory.

I think when people say lotr ripped off wow they are talking about the game itself, the way some things work and NOT the actual universe, if anything wow is closer to the warhammer universe. Lotr does work in many ways just like wow does but i don't see this as a problem. Both games are great and are different enough to offer 2 completly different experiences.

Well, the Warcraft universe is heavily influenced by Warhammer, which in turn was influenced by LOTR (though, I don't know for sure from where Games Workshop got their ideas...)

games workshop get their ideas from everywhere - that's why they make such cool universes, they aren't afraid to copy stuff - but they don't just take an idea and change it, they take a hundred ideas and combine it into something new that's got nothing truly original when each individual component is analysed, but the sum of those borrowed parts is very original and awesome... at least, that's my take

warhammer & 40k are perfect examples of how "ripoffs" are a good thing

as I said, I didn't know where Games Workshop got thier ideas... :)

Warhammer 40k wasnt released until 1987, 13 years later and was heavily influenced by AD&D.

tkemory

And you mean warhammer, not warhammer 40k.
