Forgive me if I sound like a total noob, I'm pretty new to PC gaming an d I'm glad I made the nosedive into it. My questions is the following, I've noticed a lot of people don't play their games at 1920x1080 (1080p). I've seen people with way better rigs posting how they play their games at a lower resolution. Is there a legit reason for this?

Ofc. :) Many people dont have 16:9 ratio PC screens and not all have that kind of resolutions either. Setting a LCD screen to anything else than it's native resolution will look really blurry and bad. Myself are perfectly happy with 1680*1050! (16:10)

I've recently been playing PC games at 1920x1080, and the problem I have is that many games can't scale their display fonts. So at higher resolutions the text is absolutely tiny and difficult to read (I find Dragon Age a literal headache). I wish they'd do something about that >.>

There are also people with smaller monitors that still use 1280x1024. And lower resolutions can help with framerate performance as well.

In my case it was that I wanted to build my rig firstand buy a higher resolution monitor later. But now i'm confused if I should wait because of the new 120z and 3d monitors.

1. my 19" PC monitor only goes up to 1440x900.

2. The only LCD tv I can hook my up PC to is 720p or 1280x768. We have a 1080p tv. But there's no room for the PC where it's at and besides, the DVI port is being used by a Mac Mini.

I'm waiting at 1680x1050, hoping that eventually the price for 1200p will go lower. I don't like gaming on 16:9 =/

what so bad about gaminging 16:9 its a wider aspect ratio so you see more then a 16:10 monitor giving you an advantage in gaming what not to like?

putting the taskbar on the side mostly fixes that.

True. :) But it's not all, most apps use the whole screen, sometimes it's better to have a wider screen and sometimes a higher screen. Myself sitting in some music building apps that need ultra hight im consider to fit a normal screen and rotate it using it as a 1050*1680 screen. For me even a nonwidescreen would be best but i will not go backwards to the CRT and the old LCD's were horrible.

First off, I don't have a monitor with that high of a resolution. My Dell P1110 maxed out at 1800x1440, but now that won't hold focus, so I'm back to using an older monitor that only runs at 1280x1024 comfortably. (It can go up to 1600x1200, but it'll only run at 60 Hz, which is uncomfortable on a CRT.) Second, while higher resolution is nice, I insist on at least 50-60 FPS minimum whenever possible. The higher, the better, of course. I can't do without that silky-smooth movement, and my current system is already hard-pressed enough to maintain that as 1280x1024 or even 1024x768 with recent games.

Putting monitor --> portrait along side one or two widescreen landscape monitors = win!

many of us used to play CS on 800x600 as the larger screen (models) meant more accurate gun fire the disadvantage being less viewing angle but worked well on indoor maps.

You won't get "less height", you get more width.

Remember that all aspect ratios are based off a fixed height. That's why widescreen is called "wide"-screen, not "short"-screen.

I've got 16:9 nearly 17' LCD monitor and 1024x768 resolution is quite enough for me...
