I might be getting a Mac laptop before University, and I heard there really bad for games. Its not that big of a deal for me because I mostly play on my Xbox 360, but how bad is it? The only PC games I want to play would be RTS's like Civ 4, do they work with Macs? I have a nice PC at home for the bigger games like Bioshock and Crysis when it comes out, but I wont be able to bring it to University with me. And whats the whole games for windows thing? thanks

Well I still havnt decided I'm just still angry about how bad Vista is. I installed it on my Dell desktop and it wrecked it almost everything doesnt work, theres now a big hiss noise so i cant listen to music, and i've been on help lines for hours. Alsoa lot of myprograms dont work and I cant get MaCafee to work now that I have Vista. I aslo cant talk to my friends on msn. Plus i've only heard good things about macs from people, and anyone i know who got one didnt go back to windows.

Just upgrade to XP if you already have a PC. And throw that horrid Vista out the trash or have some fun with it like putting it in the micro or simply just burn it.

Im going to ask you a similar question: What feature(s) of Windows Vista were you planning to use, that you bought it for your PC?

You might be able to see where im going with this. If you can't answer the question, then i dont see much of a reason for getting a Mac laptop or Vista.

Civilization IV is available for a Mac.

Games for Windows are games that definitely work well in Vista.

But the Macbook laptop has an intergrated graphics card so it wont run many games very well. The only laptop from Apple that will run games good is the Macbook Pro it has a core 2 duo 2.2, 2 gigs of ram and 8600 GT it is 1799.99 with student discount.. I have the top Macbook Pro which is 2499.99 it is pretty godlike when it comes to gaming when having windows vista installed. But dont expect to play anything other than older games or WoW on your Macbook

Macs now have a program called bootcamp, which allows you to create a hard drive partition to install windows (XP or vista) on. From it, it is just like having a windows laptop and you can play any windows games on it. Not sure how well they will perform, but you have the possibility that they will work!

Mac can play games if you have windows XP installed or something, and the hardware sounds decent. But after a year or two, if you want to keep up with the timesyou don't upgrade parts along the way like a PC,you throw out your old mac and spend $1200 on another mac.

I just got a macbook pro for 1700 and I have to say. Damn. I have been a mac hater and thought boot camp was my way out and I was right. Boot camp throws a native xp installation on your system. I have BF2142, civ4, oblivion, vampire bloodlines, and company of heroes running damn near full settings and they all look GORGEOUS. The system is stellar. It is incredibly fast and runs games INCREDIBLY well compared to other systems in its price range, only close contender is IBM thinkpad T61P. The system is stable as all get out and when you want to do something other than games, OSX is alot of fun and really, really quick. You can leave a ton of programs running (with xp running in a seperate window with parallels) and have browsers, music, photoshop and other stuff running and not experience any slow down. Not to mention, the speakers, keyboard, battery life, and LED screen are some of the best there is. Trust me, as far as rock solid computing goes, the macbook pro takes the cake. The macbook with intel integrated on the other hand.......

Vista puts xp to shame. You have encouterred compatibility issues with peripherals, nothing more. Vista is more responsive, has a more performant and stable interface, comes with WMP11, Media Center, Windows Live... it supports DX10, you have a 100x more powerfull search function, soon vista will have 3d desktop effectsfor icons and windows, give vista 6 months andyou will start to see fckin incredible mods.

Perhaps you 'upgrated' xp? you haven't reformated before vista? installed the wrong drivers?

Mac = overpriced piece of garbage...

Vista isnt that bad when it come installed on your laptop from what I saw. I'm still using XP on my desktop and I'm not planning to upgrade until SP1 at least. But damn Vista > MacOSX eveyday.

If you want to pay a lot for a piece of white plastic go for a mac, If you want to stay at a reasonable price for better performance, then go for a PC.

yeah, I've had mac peeps telling me ''it's illegal, do not mention it AGAIN X('' and other people telling me I was a bad sport. Probably kids, supporting the war on terror, i-Pods and Mc Donalds with a big legal smile on their face.

The macbook pro is actually competitively priced. You can't find a laptop with its hardware, features, and track record for the same price. Try it.

Wait, that was sarcasm, right?

I got a friend who had the 'opportunity' to try out Vista. Just getting Diablo II to work was a hassle. Doable, but WTF? The OS ****s a brick when you try to do anything.

-OMG you put in a CD do u want me to run it?!

-Um, yeah, that sounds good.

-OK! OMG This software came out in '99 I don't know what to do!!!

-.... *puts barrel to the temple*

And in return, what do you get? A 3d version of Alt-tab. Thanks microsoft. You know, I was thinking maybe some more software and hardware compatibility would be nice, or maybe a few less glaring security holes in IE, but you know, come to think of it, this is really what I needed.

hey kid. new to computers? update drivers, right click D2, set compatibility as XP2!

I have installed over 40 games on Vista, I made them all running in 5 minutes MAX (after install). Your school yard buddy should be speaking to me. If you haven't tried anything regarding vista by yourself you're just talking absolute BS and should get a spanking. A **** brick? XP freezes when you try to do anything with it'S cpu dependant interface! It locks up and looses performance because memory dumping is SUCKAGE after 24 hours of running. IE blocks everything now (so much I'm starting to hate it as a part time web designer) get lost before I get technical you little twit.

Never said XP was awesome, I just don't see Vista as a significant improvement. I was there while he was getting it to work and I've done a few basic file transfers and web surfing and a couple other things with it and I'm not really seeing any improvement besides eye candy for the tards who think Halo is the best game evar.

My XP laptop runs for days without crashing or even getting that slow, so I dunno what the **** you're talking about. Lack of built-in DOS support is a pisser though.

here's my take, yes, macs aren't that good for games. Why? well number one if you're talking about the operating system itself there are like, what, 12 games? If you install Windows on your super new expensive intel based Mac, than theoretically PC games should run fine...for the time being. here's my single gripe with everything Mac: YOU CAN'T UPGRADE THEM. if you want to upgrade them, you better get your pick and hammer ready because its completely sealed, no convenient screws to open the case. What does this mean? well when you want a more powerful platform, it's as simple as tossing your old computer and spending five more grand on something that'll maybe last you a year. Long story short, if you want to stay on par with today's graphics and you use a Mac, get ready to spend. A LOT.

WELP, since your askin this question you must not be too computer savvy, its not that macs are slow or their hardware sux its that their OS doesnt support most games.

You would be better off gettin a non mac laptop, just as good if not better despite what you hear bout graphics and macs, also probly quite a bit cheaper, BUT if u really end up gettin a mac i heard that the new Macs all use Intel cpu's and that you can actually install Xp or hell, probly even vista now, and if thats the case you could just make a seperate partition and dual boot, XP/Mac OS

Google it and find out.

You could resell a macbook pro 3 years down the road for not much less than you paid for it. There is a reason for that. And yes, the 1999 one is the one I am asking you to match. The T61P was my first choice for a laptop but the leadtime for ordering was about two months and I was sick of waiting so I canceled but hey, getting a macbook pro in your hands the day you want it is kind of nice. The OP said he wanted a laptop for school work with the ABILITY to play some games like civ4 and the like. Ideally this is the realm of the Dell XPS, unless you are adverse to small screens and @ssholes for CS representatives. If you think of anything by HP, you might as well hang yourself by the massive power cord it comes with. Sony's are less powerful and typically as costly as the new MBP. Asus is alright but can be problematic in terms of dependability. Acer just plain SUCKS. Toshiba is good if you are 65 and wondering if a bath is a good way to rid your pc of viruses. A thinkpad is good if you are a badass and love a pc that will last forever....and are patient enough to wait FOREVER to get a non preconfigured one. And a MBP is good for....well....everything, because it is very powerful, user friendly, dependable, good to last atleast 3 and a half hours on a battery, and still worth close to what you paid if you kept it in good shape. I really don't see a point to argue against it. For what you get, you pay a fair price. The t61P cost the same and has almost IDENTICAL hardware. Everything else is just not ace.

Macs aren't BAD for games, but they aren't as good as PCs either. You can get a Mac that's more powerful than the PCs most people have today, but it'll be overpriced and you won't be able to upgrade it much more than in terms of memory. But no one buys a Mac to play games on it anyway, but if you buy a good Mac today you have much better game playing opportunities than you did a few years ago.
