In a month or so, I plan on buying a 13in macbook pro and I feel it is a good match for my needs. I also know that this forum is pretty renowned for apple/mac hate so basically I'm after some suggestions for what you guys think my money could be better spent on, given my requirements.I'm going to be using the device for some cross-platform application development and basic tasks (web, IM, music etc), gaming is not the focus as I have a more than capable rig - though I might choose to play a few steam games on a rare basis.

I would like my laptop to match the following specification/characteristics:

  • Good build quality - aluminium or similar. Cheap plastics a definite no
  • Portable size/weight. Not looking for anything above 14in
  • Longish battery life
  • High end Core 2 or greater (i3/i5 pref) - currently using a lappy with ULV CPU and wanting something a bit beefier

The 13in MBP ticks most of my boxes and would cost £858 for the basic model with student discount. I would not like to spend too much more. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You did see that he said that he didn't want anything over 14'' right? :) Well, while I don't love apple computers as a whole, I do really like their laptops. While a bit on the expensive side I just don't think the build quality can be beat. I had a friend who recently got the 13'' Macbook Pro and they just love it.

Probably should have said I'm based in the UK but thought that the fact I was using pounds sterling was a give away. As for the suggestion it's really not what I'm looking for; portability and battery life not really anything to write home about, nor am I really liking all that glossy plastic - though the specs are nice.

Yeah. I did look at these for a while but in the end dismissed it as the cheapest option on the Sony website is £1500, nice suggestion though - a really well built laptop from what I can tell.

lol Anyway I am not sure but you could get an m11x for that price range, and actually be able to game when you want to. It can switch from dedicated to integrated to save power (gets 8ish hours) but then switch to dedicated to game with (probably 2 for gaming, but it can play any game pretty well). I suggest getting 4gb's of ram as a minimum and just get the best processor you can after that.

I think there is a sale on where you get 4GB RAM and an i7 for less than $1100.

I have and he is correct. Unless you are using it for editing it's a waste of money. All the things the TC wants are quite petty (imo) except the battery life. He is basically paying a premium for looks and size. The aluminum also makes very little difference......

i used them for a year for video editing. found i could do exactly the same stuff on PC as i could on the macs (except for Livetype, thats agreat program). I also sell macs every day at work and still think they are pointless.
