I am buying a Mac tomorrow, but I am not sure which one should I get?

With my budget it boils down between a Macbook and a Macbook Pro.

The price difference for me is $150 because of the student discount. It seems like the new MacBooks have the same processor and graphics card as a Macbook Pro. So is there any reason to get a Pro of a regular Macbook besides the back-lit keyboard and the extra 2 GB ram?

Any help would be appreciated!

I was wondering where you are getting the school discount? Is it through apple or through your school? Also is that for the 13 inch screen or the 15 inch?

Its from Apple. As for the question I would just go for the Macbook, unless you count on doing some gaming or whatever. That price difference is pretty big for a student like you I presume?

Thanks for the link. Not a bad price plus it comes with a ipod touch. Maybe I will do this for the start of the 2010 fall semester.

Oh, and I'd personally spring for a Macbook Pro(currently saving up for one), since they look better to me. If you don't care about that, then just go ahead and get a Macbook. Both look good(as with all Apple products), Macbook Pro just looks cooler and is sturdier due to an aluminum body instead of plastic.

Maybe he wants OS X? You don't have to belittle people with different opinions than you.

Getting a mac is such a waste of money. I don't get the appeal. Do you just want to look cool? Are you getting it as a status symbol? A PC can do twice as much and is twice as powerful for half the price of a mac. I say you should seriously think about getting a PC and you can save the rest of your money.

Power isn't the only thing people look for in a laptop especially for students. Battery life, resale value, customer support, and dependibility are also important.

Current iterations of OSX can be made to run on any Intel-based PC. So your point is kind of... moot. Unless of course the buyer has never heard of the horrendous crime of running OSX on non-Apple hardware, in which case, well...

I usually hate the anti mac comments, but they have a point (unfortunately, although for all the wrong reasons).

If you want OSX, make a hackintosh. This is coming from someone who owns a macbook pro. I love it, but I also understand I could have gotten something a lot better for the same price.

I suggest one of the Asus computers with an i7.

You can always do it the hackintosh way, if you don't mind being a bit... illegal, and not supporting Apple.

EDIT: And to the above poster who gave the Newegg link: ASUS for the win!

Lets see, If I spend $1000 on a laptop it better be powerful. You can probably find PCs with better battery life than a mac for half the price. You just have to do a bit of research. and Apple is a very shaddy company when it comes to quality of their products. 4 of my friends bought iTouches and 3 of them had to send theirs in for new ones because of faulty hardware. The headphone jacks were not working correctly only a month after they bought it.

That sounds like really bad luck. I haven't had any problems with mine, and I don't use cases or screen protectors, because they ruin the look and thinness of the iPod.

As for performance, Apple optimizes their software very well, so it's like having better hardware, except it's not better hardware. It's just better utilized hardware, which makes the performance better. I hope I'm not being confusing. On the flip-side, third-party developers for Mac may not optimize nearly as well as Apple does, so there's a chance third-party software won't run as well as Apple's own software.

Meh, i haven't really noticed a difference in optimized software between my mac and my pc. Macs aren't exactly the worst computers to begin with, they are just more expensive. Therefore, they are still capable of running pretty much all software. That is, until you consider gaming. Even then, I have been able to play bioshock and the steam games currently available with NO problems at all, but the selection on games is considerable smaller. Like I said, if you want a Mac, make a hackintosh. If you are too lazy, then just buy a mac. But don't expect to get an i7 with 4 gigs of RAM for $1100.

I'm not an apple fan but if the guy wants an apple product let him have it, is not like he's asking for our money or something like that, beside, he asked for advice not to be bashed or called an idiot.

So what you're saying is that it will work much better as long as you never try to stray from proprietary Apple software? Um, no. No. Not a good option, primarily because none of the games I like have "Apple" listed as their developer. Not trying to be a "hater" here but if if Apple software is the only software that runs well on their platform, I'm not interested. That would be like Dell flat out stating that if Microsoft Office isn't running well on their computers it is because you didn't use the authorized Dell version. That would actually be illegal in some countries.
