I'm not quite sure why anyone would buy one of these things..

A 17-inch macbook pro starts at $2799 while an Alienware M17x starts at $1799.. in fact the 15-inch macbook pro starts at $1999..

Already this is completely ridiculous.. but it gets even worse.

Here are the specs.

Processor- 2.93 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory- 8GB 1066 Mhz
Harddrive- 256GB solid state drive
Display- hi-res antiglare widescreen
Graphics card- nvidia 9600m GT

This all comes to $4,899.. although this is already a ridiculous price let's compare this to the M17x

The specs for one of these maxed out are

Processor- Intelcore 2 exteme quad qx9300 2.53 Ghz
OS- home premium 64-bit
Graphics card- dual nvidia geforce GTX 280M 2GB
LCD panel- 17-inch (1200p)
memory- 8GB 1333 Mhz
hard drive- 1TB
internal optical drive- duel layer blue-ray combo

All of this comes to.. ready for it? $4699
Quite amazingly the M17x comes out cheaper than a Macbook even with vastly superior specs.

Hmm.. something just does not seem right here, especially when you consider that the macbook would be even more expensive if you choose to have things like finalcut installed on to it. Now really.. I can understand why people might like apple's OS better than windows, but I cannot understand why anyone would shell out that much money for a laptop that's not worth it. Let's face it people, when you buy from Apple, you're paying for a brandname

You are not getting the Windows OS for free when you buy a prebuilt computer either, brah. The OS's costs the same. It is ONLY the "design" you pay for (and quite frankly, who cares that much if your laptop is white or black?)

I know Apples have always been considered overpriced, but I just thought I'd show some people how much they are getting ripped off if they buy one. Although I wouldn't really recommend Alienware's either, as they are also overpriced.

I didn't pay that much for my MacBook Pro, mine came out to around 1,800 bucks but that is with my work discount. Only way to really afford them if you can get discounts otherwise no chance.

The regular Macbook is more reasonably priced. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would need all that hardware in a laptop in the first place, including the Alienware one.

I mean for the amount of money that either one of those laptops cost, you could buy a kickass midtower AND a Macbook.

I'm on my GF's 15' Macbook right now, it was around $1500 bucks it isnt a gaming powerhouse but it works beautifull, everything is streamlined and smooth, I am a PC nut, and Macbooks are alien to me but everything is super simple to figure out, so simple infact I tend to overthink things when I get stuck using it, ha ha. It came preloaded with actual usable software not just bloatware. Macbooks are great for some people, but for most people on this forum it is a waste of money because my guess is you arent using it for what it's intended for.

The Macbook is an "all aluminum uni body shell" while the Alienware uses "plastic." The Macbook has a multi touch touchpad with innovation controls like a iPod touch. The Alienware is a one finger operation. The Macbook has iChat and a slew of other features well integrated. Alienware does, but not as easy. The Macbook is much thinner than the Alienware. The Macbook is a status symbol. But apart from that, I guess a wee bit too expensive.

Don't really care of any 'status symbol' and 'aluminium uni body' stuff... Also - I just wouldn't by laptop for gaming. I'd buy (and in fact I did ;)) high-end version of 13 inch MacBook just for the sake of using OS X. It's just way better than Windows and less annoying then Linux. Somewhat between, which makes it actually perfect.

Any other news you want to share with us? Haha seriously, this Mac Jewness is nothing new, even Mac fanboys got to admit they get ripped off, but the only difference is they don't care.

Sorry but that Alienware blows the Macbook out of the water about a thousand times over and it's cheaper. Also your status symbol thing just proves my point that you are paying for brandname.

Apple does have a nasty habit of charging a premium for their hardware relative to specs (this being an especially egregrious example), but there are other things you must consider. -If you're configuring things like RAM and hard drives direct from the manufacturer, you're going to get ripped off no matter who you order from. -All the processing power in the world doesn't mean a damn thing if the battery goes flat in fifteen minutes off of AC. The Unibody 17" MBP, considerably weaker as it is, can manage up to 7-8 hours on a full charge (albeit at the cost of being an officially user-replacable battery). Does Alienware's offering last even nearly as long? -Apple laptops in general tend to take into consideration overall weight and portability. The Unibody 17" MBP only weighs 6.6 pounds, which is impressive given that I've held a 1998 MainStreet/WallStreet PowerBook G3 that weighed between 7.5 and 8 pounds-and, let me tell you, I didn't want to carry it around for very long! How much does the Alienware weigh? -Some people need software that only runs on OS X. With Boot Camp, it's a cinch to make the MBP boot Windows. You might get OS X running on the Alienware laptop, but it won't be seamless and the legality is questionable at best. -FireWire Target Disk Mode. This basically turns any FireWire-equipped Mac into an external drive-its hard drives and optical drives are accessible to whatever other Mac you connect it to. I have never seen a PC of any kind replicate this function in the BIOS, and it's a godsend if you have another FireWire-equipped Mac to perform diagnostics with if the OS decides to screw itself over while the hard drive's still intact, or if you just want to transfer files without fiddling around with network file sharing or external drive shuttling. -Word is that the unibody construction of the 17" MBP you're looking at is outstanding. I can't comment on this myself, though-I've never been in the presence of any unibody Macs. -If you're going to bring up the "how do you even right-click?" card: put two fingers on the trackpad and click, or hold down Ctrl and click. Those same two fingers can also be used to scroll in both directions, which soundly beats the pants off of those scroll strips you find along the edges of PC laptop trackpads. I've never touched a Mac with full-blown multitouch, though, so I can't comment there. These are but a few reasons why people choose Apple for a laptop. I don't think that Apple offers the most price-competitive laptops, or even computers in general. (Why does their only tower computer cost 2500 US$ for the entry-level configuration? It costs even more money for the second CPU and a graphics card you find in PCs a fraction of the price!) However, when the prices on old units fall to much more reasonable levels for the specs you get (I'd say that the 15" pre-Unibody MBPs are starting to have reasonable used/refurb prices now), then they're fine machines ready for the picking when you consider all the niceties that only Apple offers for whatever reason.

I very recently got a MacBook Pro, and it's my first Mac ever. I cannot imagine having any other laptop now. I love Mac OS X, it never freezes, and multitasks great, plus I can dual-boot with Windows. The multi-touch trackpad is amazing, and works better than you'd think. The entire style of the laptop is great, and is durable. It has little features such as MagSafe and the backlit keyboard that make it come together as a near-perfect laptop.

It's powerful too. I would definitely say it was worth it. And trust me, I'm by no means am I a Windows hater. I still use Windows too, and use a Dell desktop that I love. I just would like to point out that the MacBook Pro is most certainly worth it.
