Do either of these require you to play the first to be able to pick up everything in the stories?

From what I've seen I don't believe Mafia 2 is connected to the first, but if you can play the original anyway because it's a great game.

Mafia II will have a completely different story. Though I recommend the first it was top notch.

Can't help ya there, never played it. You could always just look at Wikipedia for the story and just catch up if you want.

I say check out Kane and Lynch, it's on steam sale now, you can get it even cheaper at Amazon. The story is really good, one of the better in recent memory, if anything you can catch up on the backstory.

Mafia 2 is a stand alone sequel. Its obvious by watching all the podcasts theyre doing about the game. However if you havent played Mafia 1 then I would recommend it. It still stands up well today on PC and you can get it for like $5 or less.

Agreed. There is a possibility that elements of the first game could be carried into the sequel.
