Just started playing it today... what the hell? Loading crates, driving around to gas stations, selling cartons of smokes, scrubbing toilets. So much of the game is just mind numbingly boring legwork. Where's the wheelin n dealin of the Mafia, the intrigue the betrayal etc. This game just puts me to sleep, unlike Mafia 1.

Yeah, it's a waste of money. 12 hour campaign with no replay value, stale environments and gameplay for $50/$60.

I've played through it three times. I have about 25 hours of gameplay total. It definitely could have been better, but I've played much worse. It's definitely a fun experience, I just wish it was a bit longer. The DLC pissed me off, though. Blatantly obvious the content was supposed to be in the full game. I'm never going to buy any DLC, EVER. **** DLC.

I thought it was great fun. It was some what of a let down, but not as bad as some make it out to be. I have to agree that the replay value is low.

The writing is just so boring. The trip in & out of jail felt like I went for a walk to the park or something. No drama over who got you in jail, who you met there and revenge once you got out... nah it's just a quick stay, kill a guy, do some fights, then back out to business as usual. So many missions and plots, you can just see the potential for creating some sort of dramatic story, and instead... literally nothing ends up happening.

I found the writing to be good, just poor pacing. It felt a bit rushed, especially the first "half."

I thought it was awesome except for the length and the ending. It definitely had less boring parts than the first Mafia though.

I thought the demo was awful. I didn't like driving controls, the gunplay was mediocre and the characters drove me insane with how annoying they were. Not to mention the environment is bland and dull with the same buildings and same boring looking trees.

Yeah...I'm not paying 50$ for such a boring game.

The first Mafia wasn't boring at all, other than the first 2 missions. That game was a masterpiece, this is polished crap.

I played Mafia when it first came out and for the love of me can't understand why people think it's a masterpiece. It has the most clunky gun play and melee combat I have ever found in a game of its kind. Not to mention that driving can be very tedious, considering you can hardly can speed without the damn cops being on your tail. Realism sure manifests in bad ways when you apply it to a video game. On the other hand, the story was superb. If it was not for the interesting characters and immersive story telling, I don't think I would have ever finished it. Oh, and the voice acting is kind of a mixed bag for me. While the main voice actors were pretty good, the others felt a bit flat and cheesy. Still a good game for what its worth.

Mafia 2 is unfinished garbage. It was rushed and, half the game cut out. Now peices of what was cut is being used as DLC. Cars, side missions, customization. The game was suppose to be A LOT more.

Havn't bought a 2k game since Mafia 2, and don't plain on buying another one.

That's a shame, the original Mafia on PC was great, there was nothing particularly great about the gameplay, but I think it's a good example of how a great story and atmosphere can really drive a game.

Last time I'll get a 2k game (was also my first). Well I knew that the game was going to have DLC's but didn't know the game was THIS empty without DLC. I enjoyed the story mode but that's all to it.

It was what I expected: a highly cinematic semi-GTA clone with Uncharted-like shooter characteristics. I found this out playing the demo and wanted to play the entire game, so I paid $50 to get it when it came out and don't regret it. I have a thing for the highly cinematic titles, like Uncharted, Enslaved, GTA4, Heavenly Sword, etc, but of course I got Mafia II (and GTA4) on the PC

just played it through and wanted to share my opinion:

THe main game is, as everybody already knows, quite short and finally disappointing, there is no real feel to it, the DLC was probably supposed for the main game and cut out in order to warrant extra income. The effect is that both feel a little disjointed. The main game being short, the DLC being tedious, it almost felt like a chore, played the whole betrayal thing ;(, started the vendetta and couldnt stand it after a couple of missions. Then I played Joes adventures, didnt wanna play it until the end though... am gonna re-sell it, what a waste of time and money, luckily I waited on the platinum version together with the DLC... it could have really been a great game...

There are some terrible design choices the dev team made, but overall, it provided me some thrills. It was cool to see 50's NYC, and I thought it looked much nicer than Liberty City. I loved seeing the changes from the 40's to the 50's, from the style of cars and clothes, and rock music on the radio.

What the game needed was more sidemissions, because you barely see the map throughout the story. Then buying guns and clothes was completely useless because I'm pretty sure there were about 4 separate occassions you lose all your ****. Its linearity killed it, and there was some awful mission design in there as well.
The middle parts were the best. They had some nice set-pieces like the meat factory and I liked the change up of the prison level.
But the rest of the game was bland. Too much driving.

I felt the dev rushed it out for relase. There are parts of the story that should have been fleshed out and would have made for a great game.

I loved it, was so thrilled with the game when I first got it that I beat it on one sitting. Maybe it's not for you.

Fleshed out? That game needed to have threads ripped straight out of it. There were so many characters in and out that I couldn't keep up. It was a mess.

lol I know there are others that are very jaded about the game cuz it wasnt worth its initial price but I got it for free from a friend as a gift and I feel like it would be worth $5-10. I liked the game. I thought - if you jsut played it through without thinking it was GTA - that it was great. The story was nice. The drama was nice and LOVED the gunplay. So satisfying to shoot. Physics were great too. I dont know. I delayed playing for the loooongest time thinking it wasnt worth playing and then when I finally sat down and made myself give it a chance...it was pretty good. The Playboy centerfolds were a decent bonus too lol though their pasty lifeless bods did get old after the first 3...same goes for any of PB **** but hey.

It's supposed to be, in those moments; which pushes the protagonist towards a life of crime (cliche it is). The biggest problem however is the games structure in approaching these missions. Driving from A to B - and repeating, in the usual 'open world mission hub' way, absolutely nukes the pacing of the game. Thus turning what should be something that is well integrated into the narrative, into a horrible slog.

It's a completely story-driven game.

Like Heavy Rain, but with more shooting and driving.

95% of my steam-logged playtime on Mafia 2 is from the freeroaming mod with drivebys and time cycles
