I've been playing Mafia for the first time for the last few days. It's good - judging it by 2002's standards, but some elements are quite frustrating so far.
The dialogue is very awkward. It's clearly a translation, and not a very good one. The voice acting mostly makes up for that, but it's still a game I find hard to take seriously when it's so story driven and yet there's such a flaw in that presentation. It's such a disappointment because most of the rest of the presentation is of such a high standard.
There are some times when I've found myself questioning whether or not some of the realism should have been sacrificed in favour of gameplay. The driving is too slow, for example. It may be realistic, but there's nothing fun or exciting about a car chase at 25 MPH.
I'm only about seven hours in so I'm hesitant to judge the game properly, but so far I have mixed feelings. It's good, but I can't call it great based on what I've seen so far.
i remember my neighbor loaned it to me and it was pretty good in 2002.
still i haven't played it in a few years so it might not hold up....now where did I put that game disc
Wait are you telling me MAfia 2 is no longer cancelled!!!! oh god ive got to go change my pants.acidBURN1942

My favorite game of all time, but I won't replay it. I don't want my memories of it ruined in case it feels real dated by todays standards.pdkkbarnes1
i played it about 6 months ago and it is by no means substandard even by today's standards.
MFSA, you do realize that you can drive faster than 25mph (unless you pressed the key that forces your car to drive below the speed limit).
Oh, and the ending is one of the best of any game, well worth the playthrough just to see it.

Yeah, but it's awkward. On an uphill, forget about it. I played one car chase, driving along an uphil and slightly winding road, and it was 25mph. It was boring as hell. In another chase, the car didn't have the HP to make it up the hill (it was slightly damaged, though) and because I didn't have the knowledge to break into any other cars, I had to walk the rest of the way.
If the cars get faster later on, then okay cool - but so far it seems like everything's a little slower than I'd like. I appreciate the realism, but I think realism should be sacrificed in favour of gameplay in some situations.

What mission are you on? The cars get WAY faster..... I know what you mean though, but you can always pickpocket the same car you tokk on the mission if you see a pedestrian using it.

Patience, Padawan, patience... Things will get better. Some of the cars later in the game are a little unrealistic if you ask me. You won't get a GTA-"Diablo", but certainly a lot faster than in the beginning. Just listen to the music and chill while driving.
7 hrs and you still don't like it, hmmm...
Edit: funny that you said "forget about it" after playing a mafia-game...
I agree with most of the guys here, and to mfsa, I gotta say that the dialogue, cutscenes and story, are one of the best I have ever played, and you don't even know Mafia yet if you are just starting, it will get better...vash47
Will the dialogue get better? That seems like something that would be pretty consistent throughout, and I was groaning almost right away at how mediocre the writing is.
Just in the opening few cutscenes are lines like:
It was a bad time and some other people were worse off than me.
Well it looks like Morello is really trying to make me mad.
I show my gratitude to those people that help me and there aren't many left who betrayed me.
It really just feels like a bad translation to me. It's not untolerably awful or anything, but a lot of the lines are pretty cringeworthy and the English version at least could have done with a better script. Most of it just feels stilted, or unauthentic.

I loved the soundtrack, gameplay and atmosphere in the game, cant wait for part 2! :)

You summed up my words! :)

IDK, maybe because my main tongue isn't english i didn't notice those mistakes.

Hehe, I know. Xfire is like a IM program but for games, you can chat with xfire even in-game, take screenshots, videos, etc. Also it finds servers for MP games and that. Though I mainly use to keep track how many hours I play a game and what are my friends playing :P
The program is very lightweight, download it and check it out, it supports lots of games. In the page of your profile it tells you how to embed this thingy in your sig. If you want add me :)!

Dude If this is the stuff you're thinking about while you're playing a game..... I feel sorry for you. You're obviously not immersed if you're thinking that the dialogue is rough......
I don't know. I played it for a while years ago and just found it boring. I felt the same way as MFSA with the cars being to realistic to be fun at the beginning and it was a real turn off. The story was alright, felt correct for the era and gangster lifestyle but the dialogue did kill it as well.
I don't know, maybe if I played it now it would be better in my eyes but I've never really had a push to try again after the last dissapointing time.

I'm not immersed because the dialogue is rough. Stuff like that keeps me out of the game. It's one of the reasons I'm so disgruntled with the entire games industry. Developers can't write at all, and most voice acting is okay at best - and they act like it doesn't matter, and we're expected to be okay with that?
I'm not okay with that.

I'm the same way man. People may say "Well you got to immerse yourself...blah blah blah" but if you truely want to get the immersion then you need a good story. It can be told many ways but dialogue is one of the strongest delivery devices in games. If they spunk that up then it can become a game breaking for some.
I just finished it , & I want to say that I liked it alot , can't wait for Mafia II . such an amazing gameplay & story !! Shatilov
Glad to hear it. I loved Mafia too, the game was fantastic and hopefully the sequel will live up to the original.
