You don't need anything, it is all in the game.  It will show you how to play as well.

I've been playing it, and for ten bucks I'd say it's great.  :)

You should consider Hex as another card game to look at, once it releases in a few months.

But yes, Magic 2014 is completely self contained and generally designed for beginners or someone completely new to Magic.

Yeah each yearly release is standalone and you have to purchase new decks/skins etc... I just grabbed 2014 for my iPad and it seems to be a marked improvement over last year. If it is any good I'll probably grab the premium upgrade for $10.

I was considering getting this too.  So you can freely build your decks of the 250+ cards right?  Can you earn the cards then use them in any mode, or do you have to buy the packs with real money to build your own deck to play against friends?  Also, these cards are exclusive to this game right?

i used to play magic and loved it, but ultimately its too damn expensive and I needed to stop :P.

Are you a dev or a fan of Hex?  Is it a new card game or based off something like magic is based off real cards?

I love the idea of Magic as a computer game. It lets you play the card game Magic without having to deal with the kind of people who enjoy playing the card game Magic.

Heh, true that. Now I can play with my buddies who don't live nearby anymore and not have to resort to public game nights filled with mouthbreathers, sociopaths, and neckbeards.

Im a kickstarter backer for Hex. There is no physical version of the game and its entirely new.

Mechanically, the game is fairly similar to Magic except it takes advantage of the digital only-nature - such as cards that are shuffled into your opponent's deck, cards that deal damage to cards still within a player's library, cards that permanently (for the match) alter the text of another card's effect, and (for PvE) cards that have exp and can level up individually.

Hex is meant to merge the competitive aspects of card games, like Magic, and MMO elements found in MMORPG's, like raids, dungeons, leveling up, story-based mission, etc.

No, unfortunately, you can't. Each deck is about 50 to 60 cards and each time you win with that deck you can unlock a single new card. Usually up to 30 new cards. The cards you unlock are predefined and you can only modify the deck with those 30 cards unlocked. You can't even touch the distribution of lands.

duesl of the planeswalkers is not meant to be a replacement to real magic and is a self contained title. There are no booster packs to buy, and you can eventually unlock everything in the game.

There is a Magic the Gathering Online, which has a horrible-looking, slow, clunky client that is meant to be exactly like Magic, but on a computer. You have access to the entirely 20 year library of Magic cards, but will require purchasing booster packs and/or trading.

Duels of the Planeswalkers is purposely limited in order to not compete and cannibalize with MTGO. Its generally meant for newer players or for casual matches.

I'd suggest trying the demo of the Duels of the Planeswalker. Not sure if they have one for 2014, but there should be one for 2013.

Huh.  I was reading up on this one (I believe) and it sounded like there was an open deck mode where you built them however you wanted and you could buy booster packs and such.  Very strange.  Well thanks for the info.

PS - Hex seems like it has potential.  How does card distribution work?  Do you unlock cards by playing?  Do you buy booster packs/decks?  Will they add cards as time goes?  Can you trade with other players?

I remember some virtual card game being shown off not too too long ago (maybe a few years, I really don't remember) and then it quickly looked like it would be garbage.  It was something where your cards evolved as you played them.  Hex looks much better.

EDIT:  I just read up on some of HEX.  Looks awesome!  I still don't have an answer to the questions I asked above (for the most part), but I get it a bit more.  This could be a really fun and addictive game, while being a cheaper (it seems) solution to playing MTG.

kind of; the new DotP has a new mode called "sealed" where you open up 6 booster packs and as you progress you get another three booster packs. You construct your deck only from these cards. You can only do this mode twice, before having to pay more money to unlock additional "sealed deck" slots. You dont purchase the 6/9 boosters you get them for free. But then you can only do this twice before having to shell out cash. Its a fairly small portion of what DotP has to offer.

Hex will, more than likely, be cheaper than MTGO but not as cheap as DotP.

I think just checking out the DotP demo is your best bet.

Steam didn't have the demo up before, but they do now.  Though the game is probably limited and I am not sure if it is what I am looking for (since they hinder all the games as to not compete too much with the real cards), it is a blast (just started) and reminds me how much fun Magic is :P.  I might pick it up since its cheap.  I am more interested in Hex though at this point.
