I've used one forever (maybe 10 or 15 years), never had a problem. I do watch what I touch with it i.e. only screws.

As long as your PC isn't on, you shouldn't have any trouble...if it is on, then you'll realise why they use strong magnets in the movies to destroy computers FAST. The long and short of it is:

Magnet + No current = Good

Magnet + current = Destroyed Rig

So don't start tinkering with your system when its on. :)

It has nothing to do with whether your PC is on or off.. magnetism is harmful regardless. If you don't believe me, get a fairly powerful magnet and stick it right on top or your HD for about an hour while it's off. Please do some research before responding. If you don't know the answer, don't post. Nothing good comes from posting misinformation. Generally, screwdrivers aren't powerful enough to cause any damage if you are careful, but it is possible. I've used magnetic screwdrivers in my PCs for years and never had a problem with it.

Any magnet has the potential to cause damage but most parts are designed to be able to handle a certain amount of magnetic interferance. I highly doubt a magnetic screwdriver really generates a magnetic field strong enough to do any damage but I also wouldnt be brave enough to bet on it.

As for using a magnetic screwdriver while the PC is actually on, I wouldnt even use a regular screwdriver while the machine was on. Computers are generally much more vulnerable to just about anything while they are on.

Thanks for the replies, but why would you even bother to open your pc while its on o.0

Why would I tinker my system while its on o.0 I'm no nublet I've been with cascade systems so I don't need lessons on how not to pull your video card while its on  or apply vaseline on your system while its on  (vaseline is to prevent condensation ) I just made this thread to see if you guys have had any trouble with them.

Oi, don't tell me im telling this guy misinformation, cos im not. Yes, if you leave a STRONG magnet next to a hardrive it will corupt your data, but if all he's doing is using a WEAK magnet on a screwdriver (which can just pick up a screw), to change a fan or something, he's got no problem as long as the comp is OFF (which i just read, he wouldn't do...of course). BTW, the reason i told him not go near his comp with a magnet, while its on, is because a current + a magnetic field = a force, which im sure you don't know much about. So get back to me when you learn something about electromagnetism.
