I've been playing WoW for about 5 days now and it's really fun... I've played about 16 hours, but I'm a little confused... where's the story? Is it because I don't have that high of a level that I can't start the main quest? Or is the whole game a bunch of side quests put together? I'm having a good time playing, but there isn't much incentive to continue on if there is no progress in terms of the story line.

 Thanks

The game is largely a bunch of side quests that loosly come together to form a story. Though it's pretty subtle in a lot of parts and you won't get it if you don't read ALL the dialogue in the quest descriptions.

the "story" is in the instances, as you move up in lvl a story become more prevelant, but then again you really have to pay close attention to actually get the story. it also helps if you played Wc3

WoW doesnt really have a story. If you read the instruction manuel it has a timeline that briefly covers the Warcraft history & gets to WoW & says something like "The story continues" or something. You dont play a story in WoW, as if you did, there would be an end. Blizzard try to make you feel like your writing history. At least thats what I think.

Couldn't have said it better. The story of WC3 and FT have been written. Now it is your character's turn to live out his story as you see it. You follow the quests you want.

Like the others said, there really isn't a story in WoW. There are a couple of chain quests that form a little story but beyond that, there's not much.

so in other words there is no story... it's just a bunch of mini quest, & exp, item, materials farming... The only online only RPG that I have played that has a story is Guild wars... but that's not really a MMO its more like Diablo 2...

Well err.. Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has a story. And a main quest line in addition to side quests. Come play with us. We aren't 11 years old or retarded, and our game doesn't look like the flintstones. I think the more realistic imagery is helping to draw a more mature, helpful crowd. By the way world of warcraft is for retarded 11 year olds! :)

Final Fantasy XI also has a story, though I will admit it is a significantly harder, more complex, and all around deeper game than WOW. It's also from an older generation of MMORPG's so it may be harder to get into for people who started with WOW.

Ya...because Orc's are so much cooler then elfs

From what I have heard, you can only play the good guys in the main campaign.  though you can play Orcs and other bad guys in what is called "monster play".  I believe that is the PvP...

What??  No one here has tried ddo?  There is a story although you can't play the "bad guys" Or has everyone here already made the assumption that it sucks?

I played it, and thought it was ok.  Problem was, there was barely anyone online on the server I picked (not sure if it like this on every server) and finding a group after lvl 5 was near impossible.  To make matters worse...most of the content REQUIRES you to play in groups.  Noramlly in a MMO, this is a great things, but in a game where you can't find groups easily...well...you can see the problem.

BTW this was like 8 months ago...have things changed?  I wouldn't mind giving the game another shot if I knew things have improved.

It is the PvP. But the monster character you choose can be upgraded and customized, and also has a bunch of quests as well. I particularly liked the ones asking for hobbit legs. :D These quests get done in the PvP area, meaning you can find a group of hero characters at any time and engage if you wish.

DDO failed when they decided to place it in the Eberon setting and not Forgotten Realms...

I dont want to sound like a ginormous tool or anything, but the story of WoW is made by the player.  You play this potential hero and as you fight for whatever faction you belong to, you come across various NPCs that let you help them with their own little stories.  As you progress, you come into contact with more well-known characters in the Warcraft franchise.

No, there is no main storyline to finish, but the side quests provide enough of a story imo.

I think the Epic story system in LOTRO blows that away, personally. LOTRO basically does what you say, having a bunch of side quests that all relate in one way or another, but then adds story instances that are very cinematic in nature, and really pull's you in much more than WoW. It just gives the whole game more meaning as a result.

Hmmm LOTRO sounds very tempting.  Im still holding out for Conan though.  But if LOTRO gets over a 9 on GS I just might check it out.
