Hi guys, yesterdayI installed a 9800 GT. Everything seemed to go ok, but when I start a game, any game even World of Goo the screen goes black for a second then I get a message "mode not supported". It's like my GPU is automaticly putting all my games into a resolution not supported by my monitor. And whenever this happens the only way out of it is to shut down my PC.

Anyone know whats going on? I already updated my drivers and I've tried a couple of differant things but I'm stupped. Please I need some help.

Thanks guys!!

You can manually edit the resolution. Program Files -> World of Goo -> properties -> config.txt

Go into nvidia control panel, make sure the resolution is set to your monitors resolution.

Or uninstall drivers, and do a fresh install of drivers from the nvidia website, not the disc.

When I updated the drivers in the first place I did it though the Device Manager. So I should do it though there website? Also to uninstall the driver do I just click on rollback driver?

no you can uninstall the driver from progams and features/add remove programs, then restart pc, then download teh latest ones for your card and OS on then install them, and see if that helps.

Ok, I rolled back the driver, I completely reinstalled the card, I made sure the resolution in the Nvidia Contol Panel matched my screen resolution and I still get the same results. Every game I go to play gives my the same message "mode not supported". My monitor is a LCD 19in and it's not widescreen.

try re-installing one of the games, then try that.

Do you have adequate power?

Yes, I have a 500 watt PSU and it only needs a 400 watt.

I reinstalled my drivers and now it's saying

"The NVIDIA Display Panel extension cannot be created.

Possible reasons include:

Version mismatch. Reinstalling display drivers may solve this problem."

Well I reinstalled the drivers 3 times now, so I don't think that will fix it. I tried updating the driver on my monitor but it said it up to date, and it's from 06.

You can't just keep reinstalling drivers like that, - I recommend investing in DriverCleaner.Net and FOLLOWING ITS INSTRUCTIONS.

Seriously.

Read the readme.

Don't skimp on any of the steps, it's especially important to run DriverCleaner in safe mode. Then reinstall the latest drivers from nvidia and try again. If the card still doesn't work in 3d, you likely have a DOA board and need to RMA it.

Also, what brand and model is your power supply?

How about checking the refresh Rate, if you go over the refresh rate of your monitor, you'll get a nice black screen and that message

Try playing word of goo in a window instead of full screen, and change the resolution to 1024x768 and see if it works

I tried changine the refresh rate and the resolution is at 1024x768. Lol, I did't buy a 9800GT to play World of Goo, I was just using it as an example because not even that will start. It actually works fine with my on board graphics.

But at one point I had a ATI card installed, I uninstalled it and gave it right back to the kid that gave it to me. I thought I uninstalled everything but that Driver Cleaner program seemed to find a driver left. Do you think that could be affecting something?

Your driver celaner is in russian? did you buy the 9.99 registered version? Make sure you're comfortable with what you're using drivercleaner can mess you up if ou choose the wrong cleaning filter. and if you had an ATI card in there at some time, there will be driver remnants so clear those out, add/remove programs uninstallation always leaves traces, that's what driver cleaner is for -

Just make sure you don't sweep out your chipset drivers along with the graphics card stuff.

Ok, I figured out the driver cleaner thing. I cleared out all the ATI drivers and it's still doing the same thing. I think I should mention that my GPU only has DVI outputs and I'm using a DVI to VGA converter, do you think that has something to do with it? I never had a problem with my 8800gs using it.
