Man, I wish STEAM would let you sell or "re-gift" games.

A friend who obviously meant well, but doesn't really know much about the games industry and even less about my gaming preferences went and sent me a gift of Grand Theft Auto IV. Nice gesture, but I really despise Rockstar and the GTA series of games.

Here's hoping Steam eventually gets around to setting up a kind of flea market/swap meet system where people could sell their games similar to eBay.

Impulse was supposed to implement a feature like that, I don't know if it has been abandoned or already implemented, check it out.

Also, you should at least try the game, it's the most different from the series and the most mature.

You could try it, you might like it, and like the guy above me said, it's a kind of different take on the series, it's more serious, etc...

NO ME! :D Plus I don't think Steam would ever allow you to sell a game. But if you didn't redeem your gift, he can send it to me, someone, or me.... :P

A controlled re-gift system might happen someday (and damn well should happen), but being able to sell games? That's never gonna happen, publishers see the used/rental game market as a bigger threat than piracy. Unlike piracy, though, they can't be vocal about it. From their perspective, not being able to resell games is one of the best aspects of digital distribution.

Sorry, I did redeem it and no, I have no intention of downloading it. I have other games I'd much rather play and I would rather not waste the time, bandwidth, or hard-disk space on a game I have absolutely no interest in.

It'd be like me gifting you a 20GB version of Barbie: Fashion Designer 4 and then demanding you try it because it's deeper than versions I-III.

Be smart business for steam for offer that service for 1 dollar. Be alot of extra cash for them and would make their customers happy but probably never happen.

The biggest disadvantage of buying online is this, you can't resell or gift your used games.

Well it's your own fault for redeeming it. You couldv'e sold it to someone else if you hadn't. I sent a bunch of TF2 to friends when it was on sale for 2$, and still have a few left because not everyone claimed it. Steam would NEVER let you resell games. The opportunity costs of that is negative.

Honestly, do not stress about it, just collapse the "not installed" roll out and problem solved. Just don't forget to thank your friend for the gift, and if you want/can return the favor!

That's good a good idea and Steam would probably be up for it. Unfortunately, the publishers will most likely be against it.

Your friend will know you don't play it. Steam tracks your play time.

Hehe I'm hoping the couple dudes will download steam eventually when they get more time, then they'll realize they have TF2 on it already. They have gaming pcs and the reason they didn't accept yet is cause they procrastinate with new stuff (ie Steam) plus life is busy.

I don't see any reason in letting you getting your money back, or regifting a game if you haven't downloaded it yet, hopefully they do something later.

@TheCaveRat

They lose the opportuity cost of another purchase, and there is little to no advantage in letting users re-gift games they own. Not to mention the 2nd hand market it would create, where people would start forums selling discounted games for cheap because they bought a bunch a few months ago when it was on sale. It's completely illogical from a corporations POV. They get all the money the instant they move a unit, and there is no profitability in letting users re-move their units, because that is potentially taking away from future sales.

TL: DR - It makes complete economic sense that Steam does not allow re-selling of their games, aka moving games from one account to another.

Yes that's exactly what it's like

Hell I despise the Uncharted series and that's apparently really good. If I had a copy of one of them lying around I'd probably give it a shot eventually during the slow season or something.

I don't understand why you redeemed it if you have no intention of playing it? Did you not understand how the system works or just changed your mind after you redeemed it? Re-gifting would cut steam sales by huge numbers. It would be like pre-owned console games only nobody is getting any of the money.

Eh, I'm the kind of person who likes keeping ALL of their games so they can be replayed later on. Also, why redeem a game you have no intentions of playing?

Yes, I'm just seeking attention.

I redeemed it because it was a gift and where I come from, it's considered good manners to accept a gift with good graces and a "thank you". You might want to give it a try some time.

I think part of the terms of agreement is that you can't sell / gift games on. You buy them for yourself or your mates and that's it. Early on there was a way of transferring an entire account, but maybe that has even tightened up since the Steam Catalogue sprouted wings. 8)

I agree. They could easily give you some kind of STEAM credit and just remove your ability to own and/or download the game. This feature would rock in the u.s.a.
