Right to cut a long story short I'm attempting to run Mass Effect. It woudln't however because of this - "Mass Effect Configuration Utility has stopped working."

I know for definite this isn't because of my specs because I run Windows 7. My specs were rated at a healthy 5.9 / 7.9 which was better than the reccomended 5.0 on Mass Effect.

So after doing a bit of research on their support. I found this. Catch is, I'm not running on Vista. I'm on 7 like I said. So even by trying the suggested method, it wouldn't work. Vista aside, apparently Mass Effect can't run on Quad Core processors.

I've contacted EA multiple times and I haven't received a single response. Any help?

Please. I really want to run Mass Effect before the sequel is churned out. Any help would be highly appreciated.

-Michael

I was about to say "It worked on mine and my buddies Quad Cores... but then I checked the link you gave and it said AMD QUAD CORES, not INTEL ones.

That sucks bud, feel bad for ya ):

One thing to check out.. is the STEAM FORUMS... they sometimes have useful info, even if you dont have the steam version. And I seem to remember a post with someone saying a way to get it working with AMD Quads and Windows 7.

I can play the steam version just fine. Try verifying the cache if you have the steam version too.

How exactly do I do that?

From a Window 7 User's point of view. :)

Sorry I'm a complete noob sometimes.

Go to your steam folder, in your steam folder you will see a folder called "steam apps" open that up and you should see a folder called "common" click on that and you will see the Mass Effect folder. Open the Mass Effect folder and click on the Mass Effect.exe and that will start the game. You can change nearly all the graphical settings in the game so you aren't missing anything.

To make things easier you could just make a short cut to the Mass Effect.exe and plonk it on your desktop.

It is a known problem when using vista or windows 7, simply right click the executable, properties, compatabilty (I think) and then check run as administrator... easy peasy...

If you bought this from steam you really need to read the store page at the bottom it explains how to fix this, it runs just fine on my quad after making the minor adjustment.

Oops. I did find it though it was just "Mass Effect" without the ".exe." Thanks a bunch Lox, for your time, and your help. Really, much appreciated. :) Now...let's try and complete a 50 hour game before the sequel is on shelves. :P

I haven't got ME installed on here yet from steam (had it running from the EA store but uninstalled it in preparation for getting the steam version). You are in the right area at least :D . I am 99% sure it is called Mass Effect.exe but where abouts in the Mass Effect folder it is I can't remember

Edit : ahhhhhh you have extensions turned off that will be why it doesn't say Mass Effect.exe and just says Mass Effect. To save time just drag a shortcut of Mass Effect to your desktop and launch it with that short cut. It's a bit amateur of EA to not patch their config program but then it is EA and to be expected.

Just have. Thanks for your time Charlie. Like Lox, your time was very much appreciated. Thank you :) Now I figure 24 days divided by 60 hours = just over two hours a day. I've got my work cut out.

as the link stated, it seems AMD was unable to make a quad core that could run the game properly.

I'm running Vista-64 on a AMD Phenom X4 9750 Quad-Core, but I didn't use the launcher. I made a shortcut to the .exe, and placed it in the Quick Launch part of the Toolbar.:P

mass effect is a mess, its buggy for many, i played for a couple hours and several parts were completely buggy, one part was so buggy i couldnt continue playing.. was with winxp/8800gtx/etc.. nothing unusual, on a well maintained system, the game was just poorly programmed

I disagree. Played it on 2 different machines. One being a vista 64 bit laptop with a core 2 duo processor and another winxp, phenom 2 quad-core. No problems on either.

I have to agree with the_ChEeSe_mAn2 Mass Effect was a pretty good port all things considered. I run the game at 1680 x 1050 all settings maxxed out and get a steady 60fps (Rockstar take note please). The only time I had a problem was when I did a botched overclocking, then I would get BSOD's whilst playing Mass Effect which were resolved when I screwed my head on right and did the overclock properly :D

I am not saying Mass Effect was a "perfect" port but it could have been a hell of a lot worse and they did put the time in to make the game PC friendly.
