Hey guys just got Mass Effect today off of steam and to my surprise I really think the graphics are horrible and don't even meet expectations I have for PS3 games, much less PC games.

With that said, I'm just wondering if something is wrong with either my settings or if Steam hasn't updated my version yet or something. First thing I noticed was that my max resolution could only be set at 1280x800. Really a res I've never even seen before lol. Is this a actuall issue with this game?

Also there is just a lack of detail in just about anything and everything, besides the character faces. Writing and wrinkles on the characters outfits look very blurry. Once again is this a issue with this game?

Screen tearing is just horrible, literally with what I'm seeing this is a game that can teach someone what screen tearing is whether its in the cutscenes or gameplay elements of the game. Even after setting vertical sync to on which helped but by no means got rid of it.

I'm just wondering if there is anything on my end that needs to be addressed either with patch or just some settings, but as for game settings there literally all set to high or very high so its got me boggled. Game seems cool so far but with this amount of issues its really hard to let myself get into it, and can't beleive that this may actually be a true indiaction of this game. My hardware specs are in my sig.

Its a really good game, but the aliasing is sometimes really bad.

I must admit that I did not care for the graphics either (nor the artstyle)

Especially that details seem to vanish and pop up at random (like patterns on armor)

it is not a bad looking game, and the draw distance is impressive (like when on a planet that you can see a beacon that is on the other side of the map).

Must admit all in all, while I dislike the kind of sci-fi it is (to me mass effect is the abomination you get if you smack star wars and star trek together to make babies). the game mechanics are decent, the writing is good, and some of the characters, altho steriotypical kinda funny.

The aliasing is bad on consoles. On PC - I use 4x AA - looks great.

I'm kinda at a loss for words coz ME has superb graphics and their character models look absolutely fantastic. It was what made the game very memorable to me coz the gameplay was just decent to me (still felt Bioware are unable to surpass KOTOR at this one). It would help if you can post some pics of ME on your PC so we can see if its really a problem on your end, which i think it is. Might be some driver issues.

I got the screen tearing issue as well on when I decided to give Mass Effect another go on PC, as I had heard it was better than the 360 version... fiddled with setting for almost an hour and I couldn't seem to figure out the issue. The combat is garbage in my opinion it NEEDS the crutch of great graphics to make it worth playing and the screen tearing eliminated that advantage. The decent dialogue couldn't save it for me. It has NOTHING on The Witcher, Fallout 3 or even it's Sci-fi predecessor KOTOR.

Yeah you're right, the graphics are nothing to be proud of... but once you get past that it's really an enjoyable game.

Yea I'm just wondering if its something on my end. I'll try to post some pics later on. Not trying to bash, but at the games current state I'm just a bit puzzled, and just want to find the issues either my end or if its just the way it is.

The graphics did not impress anyone. But the rest of the game did, like the music.

Wrong. It's just all in the details, the animaton, the parallax occlusion, high dynamic range.

But overall the game is a 2007 UE3 title. It shouldn't impress these days anymore.

Something's definitely wrong if the maximum res you're getting is 1280x800. I'm running it at 1680x1050.

I personally think the graphics are utterly superb. The detail of the character models and their animations can't be beaten imo.

Ok I've gotten it figured out now, got my res all set to the highest. Textures look better and the entire game. Graphics by no means impress but the story is getting interesting. At the moment think I want to kick some Specter butt :)

But heres a screen shot, oh yea my shadows, especially on peoples faces look pixelated. Ground shadows don't look bad just on the models.

Graphics actually look good, but they do lack detail that you get in most. But the faces are done superbly, some of the best character designs you'll every see, especially with the detail put into them. Also, you can set the resolution at any you want, I got mine running @ 1360X768. You may have to go into the config file and change it to to the res you want (because from the menu it wasn't available - don't know why) Go to your "Program Files" folder where the game is installed and look for the folder that says "Binaries" and go into that folder and launch the file that says "MassEffectConfig", now you should be able to change all the settings of the game. Problem solved.

Yea, the options menu isn't really user friendly at all. But I found that when you pull up the resolutions in the game there is arrorws that show up to the right of the box of the resolutions when your mouse goes over it. At which time you can left click to go down the menu further and there is more resolutions to chose from. They should just had the resolution box scrollable with the mouse wheel which is what I tried prior to accidently moving the mouse over and seeing the up/down arrows to click on lol.

I played ME on 1920 X 1200, it is a very underwhelming game graphically, except the character detail. Bioware did a very poor job on the environment, everything looks the same, and lacks detail. The game is vastly overrated to, biowares worst game IMO.

LOL, it's in the details it lacks severely, sorry bro, the game lacks a lot of detail most games have the environments have nothing in them, and the textures in the envornments are low res. The space cooridoors all look the same with nothing in them, like every room is just empty, no detail at all.

I can agree with that so far, and this is what I call sterile enviroments. It just looks like a game, not a living breathing world. But for the game itself so far seems interesting. But for the most part the things I listed earlier I've corrected, the rest is justnot avery well made game graphically.

Damn good storyline. You really need to get into the game to appreciate it. I doubt graphic whores would like it.

Agreed, the graphics are very "Cookie cutter", the characters are great looking though. The Game is OK, I was a little dissappointed in it, but, that is up for you to decide.

Have you tried changing the texture detail to max? I know it defaulted to Medium for me when my rig is more than capable of the highest setting. Just change it to a higher setting and restart the game for the changes to take place.

That doesn't matter, the game on max is lacking compared to most games, except the characters which are very well done.

I love RPG's. could care less about graphics, the story was Biowares worse and the same as many sci-fi, predictable. I played for 20 minutes and could see where it was going, and the choices, outside one oe two barely effect anything. IMO, Me is Biowares worst RPG ever. Sidequests were the worst i have witnessed, except maybe Gothic III. Hell, the same type of story was done in KOTOR, ancient race returns to threaten galaxy, and you could see early what was going to happen.

It's a really good game, but i agree, the graphics aren't all that great.
