Which would you recommend, and why?

Mass Effect far and away, it's much more of an experience. Not really similar, and both are worth buying, but Mass effect is vastly superior imo. Get both ;) (Mass effect is so good that other good games pale in comparison :D)Staryoshi87
Ahh Yoshi, how ya been?
That sig of yours with Chuck Norris always makes me laugh/chuckle :P
I agree about mass effect, the first time i played it i really felt like i was there experiencing what was going on in teh game first hand. The atmosphere, characters and story was really awesome to me.
Cant wait for Mass Effect 2 to come out, just hope they make it a tad larger with a little more exploration
I just bought PC-ME and it...is...awesome
anyone who boycotts this solely because of the antipiracy measures is a fool, and is missing out on one of the greatest games ever.
With that said, you cant go wrong with either game. But ME is better imo.
I do prefer the witcher over ME, but not much more then a millimeter. Both games are something you need to experience, and my preference lies in the sole fact that Im a sucker for medieval games...
My adviceis to flip a coin, and buy that game... then flip it again, if it lands on its other side, buy both ;)
Buy Mass Effect now.
But...
That is because you should wait for the Witcher: Enhanced Edition which will contain more content and less bugs!!

Yeah but I think this fellow might as well wait. I think you get some other goodies like a few stories that the game is based on too.

Ohh thats cool, the books where pretty good actually.
The enhanced version does come with some sweet extras, got this from kotaku
"For example, aside from the game DVD, we are planning to include a DVD with the D'jinii Mod Editor, as well as two additional adventures, a video DVD with extended material detailing the making of the game, a music CD with 29 tracks from the game, a music CD with 15 tracks of music inspired by the game, an 80-page instruction booklet, a 112-page official guide written by the game's developers, and a 50-page short story written by Andrzej Sapkowski. There will also be a map of the game world"
Almost wish I didn't buy it yet......come to think of it, I haven't finished it yet.
But yeah, buy mass effect, and if you still want the witcher when the enhanced version is released, buy it.

A mod Editor??? holly geeeez, thats awesome.. cant wait to see what stuff The Witcher community comes up with.
I will be getting mass effect soon so am hoping to form an opinion on this very thing once I've completed it. I've heard very mixed responses varying from witcher having more moral choices rather than good/evil choices. Witcher also seems like it's much longer. I guess I might be a bit biased because I'm a fan of sci-fi, but then again fantasy works for RPG.
I plan to directly compare them for myself and declare a single winner, unless I can't split them.
I enjoyed them both, in my opinion "The Witcher" is pretty hard to navigate with some of the quests, and also can be quite buggy at times.
Mass Effect is really fun and i'm not usually into space-age games so it took me a few weeks of pondering to decide if I should buy the game, i'm glad I did because it is a pretty fantastic game :)

What do you mean by that? Is there a lot of backtracking?
The combat in The Witcher is extremely bad, voice acting is awful and graphics take way too much hardware but still it doesn't look very good, unexpressive character models and boring typical MMO quests. It's also extremely buggy, it crashed 5 times during 25 minutes of playing, several other annoyances as well like when taking a potion and the blurry effect it caused never went away. The story was ridiculous as far as I played. Geralt trips and loses his memory (originality), you need to find some other Witcher for some reason, and a kid gets green and possessed.
I had mixed reactions with Mass Effect, the story is OK but to be honest the "twist" didn't surprise me, combat is alright, most of the voice acting is boring (both male and female Shepard sound very bored), the choices doesn't have much impact on the story and when I picked a conversation option to try to be bad I ended up being almost nice to the guy.
But at least The Witcher had choices that mattered (or so I hear, couldn't bare through Act 1).

I have played the demo of the game and I thought the combat was quite addictive and fun. It actually requires some timing and there's three different stances that actually make a difference to the combat. It also looks really cool!
I think the voice acting is certainly better than Oblivion - a lot more personality, and a lot more colourful! Its the same with the game world too - much more atmospheric and believable.
I bought The Witcher upon release and was extremely pleased with it. The mature theme and complicated story with very consequential decisions were the selling point for me. My main disappointments with the game were performance and the EXTREMELY LONG load times. Since then, the most current patch (1.3) addresses both of those issues, especially load times. The combat was not exactly the most action-packed thing I've ever done, but I wasn't expecting it to be; the animations were at least very well done. I would wholeheartedly recommend this game to RPG fans that liked games like KOTOR or Fallout, but not so much to people who prefer games like Oblivion or Fable.
I haven't played Mass Effect yet, but I definitely plan to in the near future.
