So recently there was all this fuss about mass effect and it's "sex scene" which was obviously over exaggerated. But you still don't want that content in the hands of a ten year old. A lot of people have mixed views on games being sold to under aged kids. Some say it isn't an issue or it's too high for comfort.

At the end of the day, no matter what the cause these games shouldn't be in the hands of children. This would decrease the amount of ten year olds screaming in your ear while playing halo online. It's evident that five year olds don't buy games from stores but their parents or siblings let them play these games. Even where I live , in the caribean, I could walk into an Internet cafe and see an eight year old playing GTA 4. Are we being irresponsible and allowing those kids to play these games?

What impact does it have overall? I'm not stupid, games doesn't cause violence, there's a lot of thing in society that contributes to it.

What do you think, is this dangerous. Do you watch the rating before letting the kid play with you, or do you let them play everything.

It depends on the child.

I have a cousin thats 10 and when he plays halo 3 hes simply very calm and doesnt go "YE WOOOO I KILL U" but, i see your point, the thing with 10 year olds, is that even though they KNOW what they do in the game is wrong, I.E. killing people, they find excitement in it, they become aroused. Once they hit the 12-13 year mark, they no longer become excited by it, but hardcore games such as manhunt, or gears of war, should not be given to the kids if they still find excitement in the killing alone, rather than the other aspects.

To sum it all up....

Any parent that lets their kid(s) play any game or watch any movie without checking the rating or experiencing the game/movie beforehand....well, they're retards.

Once these retarded parents realize what the game/movie is like, they're mad at themselves for letting their kid experience it. So, instead of fixing the problem (educating themselves), they turn around and scream at the companies for producing these form of entertainment.

It's the parents' own damn fault. Plain and simple....

On a side note - the so called "sex scene" from Mass Effect is pathetic. I wouldn't even call it a sex scene. The little sex mini game in God of War was worse then what was shown in Mass Effect. People just get too bent out of shape. How's about you guys go and pay attention to what you're allowing your kid to do, instead of trying to blame others for your faults?

Well kids can find violence in any games i.e. drown mario repeatedly in MArio 64 (my little cousin used to do it)

So if the kids want to find violence, they will.

Those who deliver it to them are stupid.

Guess my parents are retards... they never look at the ratings of games I buy(they really do act like it sometimes...)

I do have to dissagree with what was said about games not causing violence. Although it may not be direct, games do cause quite a bit of violence. They have a subconcious(did I spell that right?) effect on kids who's brains are still developing. It causes them to think more violently then they normally would. Kids really shouldnt be playing these games(myself included, I generally avoid games like halo, cod, gta and whatnot, even if they are fun). Sadly there isnt much we can do about it short of having the police run searches of everyone the buyer is associated with to see if the game might be for a child. The best we can do is discourage it.

my good friends little brother, who is SIX years old, plays GTA, COD, etc. he yells into the mic, etc. and you know what, he loves killing things. He thinks war is fun and theres a respawn button in life, all that crap. i personally odnt believe in the game rating restrictions to a point, but that is just an irresponsible parent not doing his/her job.

Well, it just matters how fast the kid matures. Some are immature and are annoying. Some aren't.

well first off the scene in mass effect isnt that obscene or scandalous. second off its more damaging for a child to play through gears of war then say mass effect.

but yes I do agree that kids shouldnt be playing mature games, they are made for a very specific audience which doesnt include kids :P

I started playing mature games when I was 9. Now, I'm 14 and have no intent of going out it the middle of the day and shooting someone. It dosen't depend on the game, but on the person that plays the game. If you give a mentally unstable kid GTA IV, bad stuff will happen.

Parents need to take care of their kids. I don't care if they're not familiar with the technology of the consoles, in this day in age of computers it's not THAT hard to sit down and read the manual to figure out how to lock certain games for their kids. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Mature games should be banned from all kids under 17. My friend played GTA III when he was about 10, and he's perfectly fine. I started playing games around 2 years old 19 years ago, and I'm not a violent person at all lol. It all depends on the maturity of the child and the parents' beliefs about Mature games.

What's WRONG with you people?

Every person I know (including me) has played violent games with sex and watched violent movies since they were 7 (or less) and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. People start watching porn at 10 (or less), there's nothing wrong with that, it's natural

I dont think there should be any restrictions on games. Nor films or music for that matter. Iv been playing violent games since long before the Doom games, and i havent snapped yet. So my message to the kids is: "Go nuts, but dont hurt or kill people please" hehe

Well, I think there's a lot more to this matter than simply playing or not playing violent content. I think how the parents explain it and teach their children, and the context in which they put it is just as important.

My parents have encouraged me to explore violent and sexual things since I was extremely young, but they put it all in the proper context and taught me well and I am one of the least violent - or even aggressive - people you will ever meet. I am a vegetarian and a pacifist.

It is when parents get violent games and stick their kids with them and that's their babysitter than problems might arise. In England, there are some fairly good regulations in place to keep underage people from buying games, but mature games will always find their way into the hands of children no matter what - but how parents teach their children has a much greater impact on their development.

I have to agree with the sexual content. Even if there is no sex, depictions of women with their miniskirts affect little kids especially boys.

Although i don't agree with the exposure of violence in the early ages. At the age of 9 or 10 I've been watching extreme violence in movies and playing brutal video games, i never recall myself doing or thinking anything violent amongst my peers.

You make som good points, and i agree with them. But i dont see what beeing a vegetarian has to do with anything lol.

I played some of my games without my parents consent because i knew they wouldnt allow me if they knew. But back then, at least in Norway, there werent any attention towards the violent pc games, so we never really talked about it, because it wasnt an issue. I also remember me and my friend mimicing some of the moves in games like street fighter, but actually using them never even crossed our minds. And that i credit to my parents teaching me good morals and values.

Soo, you never saw a girl with miniskirt when you where a kid? I dont think this is in any way harmful to a boy. Its totaly natural for a boy to find that interesting jeez. Its the people who says that this is harmful who makes it harmful. The sexual content in games is so innocent and censored that i dont see any problem with it..

Oh my god, Mass effect has a Lesbian Sex Scene? Oh my god, I'm so gonna buy it! Thanks for the heads up!
But god..that is so offensive isn't it? I mean, it's so much "softer" to see an Ukrainian (with all the respect for Ukraine people) shooting people on the street just because he felt like doing it right?
And we all know, that every normal kid that plays Age of Conan for more then 30 min and makes his first fatality, will probably go on to a chinese store, buy a sword, and start beheading people in the middle of the street...well...it kinda sounds like fun actually doesn't it? But this is just for a normal, regular kid.
Those kids who are already born with mental problems and that start smoking at the age of 2..well...those kids will probably just play the game, beat it, and throw it to the garbage, continuing with their normal lifes, were every day is exactly the same.

So, concluding, this extremely offensive and horrible and violent games that have Lesbian Sex Scenes (I'm so gonna buy Mass Effect) should definitly be left out of the market, or there is the risk that a normal kid will play it and start shooting people on the street, OR EVEN WORSE!! He might start watching Lesbian movies, Oh my god right?

I'm off for lunch.

Hehehe, thats kinda scary. I mean, im a hunter and meat eater extraordinare. I wonder what game tought me that. I think i played Deer Hunter one time back in the days, maybe it warped my mind...hmm, or maybe its just a few million years of evolution. But these days i guess evolution is a evil plot constructed by the ferocious and blood thirsty game developers, curse them i say!

All parents need educating to the content of games but they also need to educate themselves. It's not hard to find reviews and sites that a aimed at parents. www.whattheyplay.com is just one example.

The whole adult idea that games are for kids needs to be challenged.

If its not one pointless thing to worry about for kids its another. Kids aren't as dumb as everyone thinks, or are we all forgetting what it was like being young? Sure theirs expections, but come on one thing or another would get to them.

so we should just let anyone play it and hope that he's stable. What if he's unstable and shoots some kids in a school?

These guidelines doesn't say that your're not mature enough to handle it, it just prevents it from geting into the hands of impressionable minds.
