Hi. I'm thinking of overclocking my 9800 GTX, I've heard it can boost up to 10% on performance.
Normally it runs at about 70 degrees Celsius at full load.
What would be the maximum safe temperature ?
I heard it's 105 or something.
Thanks.

the melting point of Lead is 320C it has nothing to do with that, the card can with stand upto about 110C but well before then it will throttle down to reduce heat or simply crash. 70C is a good temperature seeing as the 8 series maxed out around 80C (like mine), and since the 9 series are basically revisions of the 8 series its a good temp. your not going to see 10% increase unless you can get something like 100MHZ plus out of the card but when you starting increasing the Hz alot you start getting into volt modding territory so i doubt you will be able to OC the heck out it without volt modding.They say 120..but thats the melting point of lead.
70 is kind warm..
I keep my GTX at 52 to 60 max
Just buy a better cooling solution..then OC the heck out of it...

A friend of mine managed to do the following without volt modding:
core: 675 --> 734
shader: 1688 --> 1971
memory: 2200 (2 x 1100) --> 2430 (2 x 1215)
Haven't asked about the temps though.

Didn't see any cooler.
From what I hear, the 9800 GTX has a superior cooling system, compared to other GPUs
Doesn't really matter what game, it'll heat up the same. But yea it's that simple.
100% might be a bit loud though. My gx2 sounds like a handheld vacuum at 100% speed. Usually put it to 70% when gaming. The auto control never went that high for me, even when temps hit 80c.
Yes, but the 9800 GTX's cooling is much better imo. You can see the extensive and long heatsink as well as the slightly tilted fan that is positioned so that it blows directly onto the core.VMAN-Vercetti
no its not the 9 series have some of the worst cooling of all and just cuz it looks big doesnt mean anything have you seen the 9800gx2 the heatink looks godly right? but its chaotic when it comes to cooling

It's not that bad actually. The only reason it heats up more is because of the auto fan control. I get the same temps more or less with my gx2 as I did with my 8800gts, both fan @ 100%. The only problem is that auto fan control, at 80c it only kicks up to 50% fan speed last time I looked.
I know this is abit off but I just wanted to say that my 8800gt superclocked 512mb card is at 48c sometimes it gets as low as 45c and as high as 65c but it has never reached 80c.
Even when I play a graphic intence game it doesn't reach that temp. Also I have the fan running at around 70% I believe.
I forgot to ask this but to the person who said thay had a 8800gt superclocked 512mb assuming card. Could you tell me what your specs where on that card.
I have that card and strait out of the box. My core clock is 650 and my mem is 950 and I'm not sure what the shader clock speed was.

Not that good...
Got my 8800GTS to 810c/1944s/1132m.
Thats what I was thinking...I OCed my 8800GS core almost 200MHz, thats only 59MHz.

I live in Southern California. We pushin about 83F temps at 9p.m. Just plain hotter ambient temps for me.

Come over to Minnesota, 32F right now.
Well I found out that Nvidia said the safe limit is 105 C and the extreme limit is 120 C.
Taking in consideration that the fan barely reaches it's maximum potential, I reckon I can overclock it even more.
The only thing that I don't want is making my 9800 gtx's lifespan shorter by doing this.

I can get my 9800GTX+(I don't think it is a plus even thought the box says it does, while GPU-Z says 65 nm) to about 830/2000/1272, but it really isn't 100% stable, I can get 800/1950/1272 rock solid stable though. I am technically "borrowing" this card until I get a new one, but the person who has it has been really interested in volt modding it.[QUOTE="VMAN-Vercetti"]A friend of mine managed to do the following without volt modding:

I managed 780MHz out of an older 8800GTS 512. 730MHz will be cake on a 9800GTX.Uh... the auto fan control sucks so if you're going to over clock, manually control the fan (Either through nvidia control panel, riva tuner or anything else you want). You'll get better temps. The 10% boost is dependent on your card and system.muirplayer
That isn't needed. The auto fan option does a great job of keeping temps within acceptable levels. Boosting it runs the risk of shortening the fan, and I wouldn't suggest it unless the OP is looking for a max overclock.

with a 9800gtx you can easily take it to 750mhz core 1875mhz shader with riva tuner and no volt modding, most people (like me) can even take it to 800mhz core and 2000mhz shader still only using riva tuner, with no volt modding or aftermarket cooler. the card doesnt become unstable and the temps dont seem to change and there is no instability, i have the fans set to 75% whenever im gaming and have never reached 70degrees in any game, my highest temp was on the Fur Mark GPU Torture test program where it went to 76degrees with the fan on 100% and on another test it went up to 79degrees maximum on auto fan control (which went to a max of 73%) in both of the torture tests the program reported no artifacting issues.Please Log In to post.
