I really need to replace my old hand me down Hp Netboard but I have no idea about keyboards. My limit is about £120 max and it needs to be backlit and have macrokeys.

I wouldn't buy a mechanical keyboard unless you're sure you actually like them.

I had 3 keyboards in my life, one 15$ no name keyboard, a logitech G11 and my current razor blackwidow ultimate. Out of the 3, the 15$ one was the best. I never could have the same feeling and accuracy/agility/micro in RTS games with any other keyboards. I hated the G11, keys were way too hard to press, and was one big ass keyboard, never found a good position for my hand that would allow me the same performances in RTS games as I had with my little no name keyboard. The blackwidow is pretty good imo, still not as hot as I used to be with it but it does the job and recommend it if you are looking for a new mechanical keyboard, I found mine on amazon for 80$US so its affordable. It's backlit and has programable macros on the fly.

I just recently made the switch to mechanical and im loving it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129005

nothing flashy, no led no macro and no 10 key but its a solid keyboard and will definitely be buying KB's form CM again. i know its not what you said you wanted, but im just putting in my 2 cents.

I would say go to a store to be able try it first because it is a much different feel.

Yes it is. I have one now for the last 3 months and I'm not fond of using a mechanical KB. It's way to sensitive for me which causes to make many typing errors. I know many like this board but I would rather have back my Saitek Eclipses that this replaced.

The thing about mechanical keyboards is that they tend to have very, VERY different switch types. I personally crave tactility, thus I go for old-school IBM buckling springs, Cherry MX Clears, and Cherry MX Blues (though the Blues do have an issue where the release point is noticeably higher than the actuation point). They just feel so much better than mushy rubber domes to me that I wouldn't even think of going back. On the other hand, I can't stand linear keyswitches (Cherry MX Red and Black, most notably, though MX Browns are also practically linear in my book due to its excuse for a tactile bump) at all for that very reason. Seems like the only way to know for sure that the keyswitch went off is to bottom out, and that's something you generally don't want to do with keyboards in the first place. Your preferences are not mine, of course, and you'll have to decide what is right for you. Unfortunately, that's not so easy without being able to get your hands on the keyboards in the first place, but you'll eventually figure out what you're looking for.

A word of warning. Stay away from Filco. The letters started to rub off the keys in the first week.

I'll never go back to membrane's after going mechanical. Cherry reds here, never used other types of switches.

I can type about twice as fast on them for some reason. I guess it's because I grew up typing on the old IBM Model M keyboards...

This needs to be emphasized! Too often I see mechanical keybaord discusion of experience and recomendations on here, without any mention of specific switch type. It can be misleading and potentially prevail to a regretful purchase.

Unlike Namelessplayer, I myself am a big fan of cherry mx black's, with gaming in mind. Obviously the best way to find your preference is to try them out, but that may not always be convienent. So it's probably best to head over to the main mechanical keybaord thread at Overclock.net, and make your best judgement based on the information and key switch comparisons provided.

No, the K90 is not fully mechanical. The upcoming K95 is, though. The K90 has only a few mechanical keys.

From what I understand anyway...

Valid point. I also prefer Cherry MX Black's and that link to Overclock.net is an extremely valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn about mechanical keyboards.

CUDGEdave

^^Yes, that is correct..... Also all the non-mechanical keys, the numbers across the top row 1-0, shift bar and all lower shift punctuation marks are not back-lit which is another reason I am disappointed with having bought the K90, along with the fact I'm not a big fan of the MX cherry red switches after having used them for a while. But that's my personal preference, and I would not recommend this board for the price one pays for it ( even though I got it on a great deal)....I think there may be better mechanical boards out there and as mentioned earlier, the type of switches used can make a big difference how one feels about typing or gaming on it..... Others may feel different. Just my 0.02 cents from having used this for a while now.
