Is there any sense buying one to replace my old (but working) Logitech Illuminated?

Nah. Wait until your old keyboard fails and then if you want to get a mechanical, go ahead and get one.

I've often wondered this, I've never had any control issues with regular keyboards don't know how it would be better

I for one like the tactile feel of using a mechanical keyboard. I know some people prefer the quiet of the regular keyboards, though. There really is no difference performance wise. None that I could discern, at least.

I enjoy some cherry reds...

If you have a little money, and want improved feedback, go for it. I got my K60 on sale for some $60...it's pretty decent. Plus I type faster too.

I use a Razer BlackWidow. It's not the best mechanical KB out there, but I'd say they're worth it.

I think they're worth it, but it's all preference. If you can go out and try one for yourself, see if you like the feel.

You don't have to depress the keys all the way on a mechanical keyboard for a keystroke to register, only partially. Handy for people who find their fingers get tired during longer sessions of typing/gaming. Some people like the distinct sound of a mechanical keyboard and even if you don't you can buy quite mechanical keyboards/cherry browns.

I've never made the jump myself. My Microsoft Sidewinder X4 still feels good.

This.

Is it worth it? well it's heavier, so if anyone tries to break into your house you could defend yourself with the keyboard (zombie apocalypse applies as well)

this. i don't recommend getting a mechanical keyboard until you can try one out, preferably in a gaming/typing environment.

I bought a K70 on a whim having never tried a mechanical (well not since the 80's anyway) and wouldn't go back to domes or chiclet. Love my Cherry Reds.

Absolutely. Tried a few at a LAN once and now I want one more than I want a CPU upgrade. They feel amazing. Very responsive and not mushy like most membrane keyboards are.

I have a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate and G105 use them equally. I like both mechanic and non mechanic about the same. Keep in mind, they're loud (clicky). You could try ordering a sample of different keys, feel em and see which ones you like the most before buying something you've never tried.
