I was wondering how many people here use a mechanical keyboard and if it helps in gaming.  Probably not much help in FPS but, may help slightly in MMOs.  I had a chance to try out the Corsair Vengence keyboard which is using MX Cherry Red keys.  Didn't really like the feel of it too much though.  The MX Cherry Blacks from what I hear are best for gaming.  Personally, I like the tactile touch that comes with the Blues.  So I'm leaning on getting the MX Browns.

I'm guessing the most common used mechanical keyboard would be the MX Cherry Blues since that is what Razer uses for their mechanical keyboard.  If anyone uses those how do you like it?

I was thinking of ordering a MX Cherry Brown mechanical keyboard but, not sure if I can justify the price I'm going to be paying for a keyboard.  Either WASD or Ducky.  WASD you can customize the keyboard anyway you want it on their website but, it's not backlit.  The Ducky keyboard has backlit but, can't customize.  SO for those that are using a mechanical keyboard did you find it to be worth it?

For those that don't know what a mechanical keyboard is:

Yep, same problem here.  I really like the Ducky Shine II keyboards and it suites most of my needs just wish it was cheaper.

I use a Filco Ninja Majestouch-2 (Brown).  It helps a little in gaming (mostly comfort), but I mainly bought it for typing, as it feels a lot better than mushy rubber-domes.

Same here. Das Keyboard. Be careful... Das Keyboards are being manufactured by a different company and they come with blues. I have the original build with browns and I love it. I bought it mainly for typing because I do a lot of work on my computer but it's also great for gaming. I would never go back to membrane keyboards. They cause too much finger/hand fatigue and very unresponsive. The price tag you're paying is worth it. You won't regret it.

I just saw the sampler kit that WASD sells.

I guess I can try and find some type of vice to put the switches in to keep them still and try them out.

Well, I do a lot of stuff on my computer other than gaming.

I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and naming while I do my music thing.

I type a decent amount in various forums, and I do a decent amount of gaming.

Would I see benefit in going to a mechanical keyboard?

Only thing I would really require out of them are 2 things.

1. I don't want the keys to be super loud each time I press them.

2. I don't want the keyboard to be super heavy either, I need to be able to easily move it to a different location, when I use a (music) keyboard.

(3) optional, do they come backlighted?

Are their any that fit that bill? (also not super expensive either lol)

Back lit with those options, look into Deck Legend. They are pricey but they will last you a lifetime. It's like one of those pay it once, pay it forward forever deals. Or Das Keyboard cherry mx browns, silent edition. Das doesn't have backlit keys but they are awesome keyboards. I love typing and gaming on them. And they look professional and won't clutter your desk.

Cool thanks, I will look into those options first.

Are mechanical keyboards (on average) that much heavier (weight) than non-mechanical ones?

Yes, they are heavier. They are not like bricks but, the keys are longer. The best thing to do is try one out at a local store to see if you like the feel and weight. As for finding a cheap mechinal keyboard... I don't think you can find one under $80. Even the ones under $100 tend to be subpar and have cheap parts.

Its mainly for a future upgrade, something for me to look at.

I will check out some local stores to see if they have any on display.

I might find one I like, then be able to get it on a sale, or holiday discount somewhere.

As may or may not have been recommended before....get a Deck and don't look back.  Yeah, they're that good.

That's very personal....  The types of stroke deliver different  feelings, some like the click sounds, softer or harder rebound and etc; besides, the keyboard manufacturer might moderately adjust the sensitivity of key stroke.

Personally, I think Red and Black are very nice for gaming, and I mainly play FPS and MMO type games.  Still, it's personal :)
