Medical doctor trying to be a PC doctor...

I'm in the market for a new PC. I hate the idea of paying HP or Dell twice the money for them to build it when I think I can figure it out with a little help and research, not to mention I'd enjoy the challenge.

Am I right in choosing this path? I have found several decent machines on Dell or HP website that have okay specs like AMD 4000 dual with 1 GB RAM and a crappy vid card for around 500 bucks. Should I just forget it and buy that way or build my own.

I need your help if I'm to build it, as I can stop a heart attack, but I have no idea how to build one of these crazy machines.

Then again, I hear July is a good PC sale month (according to Consumer Reports).

Yes, I make good money and can afford it, but I still like to get every bit out of every dollar.....

Build it yourself, Doctor. Don't let the pre-built PC companies exsanguinate your budget and eviscerate your gaming performance. Tutorials abound. Being a PC doctor is easy, plus there's less of a chance your patient will become all litigious on ya... :PSentinel672002

I'm a third year medical student about to start clinical rotations in a few days. If a lowly med student like myself can build my own PCs, I think a god-like physician such as yourself should have no trouble.

It's not even that time consuming, assuming none of the components are DOA. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to put together. The only stressful part for me is mounting the heatsink/fan over the CPU. Just read a few PC building guides and maybe watch a few videos on youtube and you should be fine.

Buy everything at NewEgg.com or ZipZoomfly.com. Both are trusted sites with good service and you'll save a ton of money. Honestly, a big part of the reason I build my own PCs is because it saves me so much money. I get a powerful PC for a low price.

As far as the specs, I would suggest you look at building an Intel Core 2 based PC. Intel is really dominating AMD in terms of performance at the moment, and I've always found Intel based PCs to be more stable.

"I'm a researcher and i did some research" (yes, i am a researcher hence the applicability of the quote) and i must tell you that building a pc yourself is (1) simple and (2) allows you to gain a better understanding of your PC and parts.

ps. ignore the troll above. Also, i'm not sure how one would "stop" a heart attack, unless you're referring to administering several medications or an emergency procedure to restore bloodflow to the myocardium. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks for the info. First, where you are is anything but lowly.And, where you'll be is anything but God-like. I know the attendings make you feel otherwise, but it's just a frat thing. If you're careful you'llpay attention to the writing on the wall and prepare for that (as a doctor goinginto medicine when it's about to go socialized).

Or you could take it a step further and keep all the risk factors away starting at age 20. No one will really know it but you'll extend many peoples' lives by 10-20 yrs by that alone.

I'm not sure what "stopping" a heart attack means, but you can give a lytic agent, or if you are in a very modern facility you may have access to a cardiac catheterization lab which can insert a stent. There's also coronary artery bypass grafting for when catheterization isn't appropriate.

Well an inch from the ground it is, but the growth is a dot it looks like I got some rust on the plumbing :o

Probably right, but there are lots of bugs that cause "rust on the plumbing". Most likely is HPV or genital warts, which don't really concern me with males but giving it to females can kill them. Can you get rid of them? Sure, with some method (I use trichloroacetic acid). Can you transmit the virus without the warts? Yes. Moral of the story: USE CONDOMS.cgardner76

You're right, it would've made much more sense if I'd said I could stop a heart attack and I'm a plumber.

No, I don't mean waving a wand over the patient and magically opening the widowmaker. I mean seeing it coming, which is way more difficult than seeing it happening.
